The Elizabeth Harris Gallery is pleased to exhibit the Danish artist Maja Lisa Engelhardt for the first time. Her exhibition The Second Day is based on a specific theme as were her previous exhibitions in New York; Pillar of a Cloud 2003, Light/Darkness – Way through Landscape 2000, Burning Bush 1996 and Tumulus 1995.

The nineteen paintings titled The Second Day are part of an ambitious project she is undertaking, which consists of a long series of paintings inspired by the book of Genesis from the Old Testament. Accordingly, the world was created in seven days; hence Ms. Engelhardt is creating seven series of paintings that literally have their motifs derived from the text in the Bible, “ And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. And God called the firmament heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.”

And so Maja Lisa Engelhardt is using the language of paint to make a visual record of The Second Day.

A fully illustrated color catalogue – The Second Day/ The Seen and the Unseen with a brief text by the artist printed by Narayana Press accompanies the exhibition.
