DAVID IVIE

October 13 – November 12, 2005

The Elizabeth Harris Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings and sculptures by David Ivie . The Gallery is located at 529 West 20th St. , 6 th floor and is open Tuesday through Saturday 10 – 6 pm. There will be a reception for the artist on Thursday, October 13, from 6-8 pm.

David Ivie is an American living and working in London , England . He brings with him a new body of work that further expands his ongoing artistic exploration that emanates from his background in Jungian psychology.

As Maureen Mullarkey states in the essay from the catalogue for the exhibition: “The pleasure of David Ivie's painting – call it a frisson – lies in the difference between the seeming innocence of his depictions and couched suggestions of something darker, more disquieting. Faux-naive figural motifs belie the conceptual complexity and range of association in these near-miniature narratives.”

Ivie's small bronze sculptures have a similar dense presence as the paintings and they are, for the artist, “an extension of the paintings and drawings,… as if some components have swollen like fruit, fallen off, become neutered of color, and fossilized”.
