Dazzling, romantic, mysterious, exciting, ominous, and just plain beautiful -
all describe New York City after the sun goes down. In
Night New York we have tried to capture this magic as depicted in paintings,
photographs, and works on paper, all done within the last ten years.
Painters Yvonne Jacquette, Jane Dickson, and Alex Katz are well
known for their images of the subject. Richard Bosman's painting is from
a series he did in the late 1990's, and Barbara Friedman's painting is the view from her studio in the
Wall Street area. Ron Milewicz and Simon Gaon have been painting the city for years, and Doug
Martin recently turned from landscapes to cityscapes. A wide variety of photographic impressions
are represented by Rachel Cobb, Thomas Donohoe, Peter Hendrick, Barclay Hughes, and Charlie Snaps.
Paul Chojnowski's haunting image of city lights is created with paper, water, and a blow torch; Daina
Higgins' take on a deserted Williamsburg is done with stencils and spray paint; and Christina Ray's
menacing subway station is in graphite and gouache on paper.
