Stitching Instructions for Making the Rise And Shine Washcloth Pattern:
Main Body
- Foundation Chain: Start by chaining 32. This base chain will determine the width of your washcloth.
- Row 1: Double crochet in the 4th chain from the hook. Continue to place 1 double crochet in each remaining chain across.
Note: The 3 skipped chains at the beginning count as your first dc. → You will have 30 double crochet stitches at the end of this row.
- Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), turn your work. Double crochet in each stitch across the row.
- Repeat Row 2 until your piece measures 9 inches (23 cm) from the beginning. Do not fasten off – you’ll proceed directly to the edging with the same working yarn.
Edging Instructions
- The edging is worked in two rounds of single crochet around the entire square.
- Edging Round 1:
- Ch 1, turn.
- In the first stitch, work 3 sc (this creates your first corner).
- Sc in each stitch across to the last stitch.
- In the last stitch, work 3 sc (second corner).
- Now rotate the piece to work along the side. Sc evenly along the edge rows (this side is made up of row-ends, so place your stitches evenly spaced).
- When you reach the corner formed by the opposite side of the starting chain, work 3 sc in the first chain (third corner).
- Sc across the chain stitches to the last chain.
- Work 3 sc in the last chain (fourth corner).
- Work evenly spaced sc stitches along the remaining side edge.
- Join with a slip stitch to the first sc to complete the round.
- Edging Round 2:
- Ch 1, turn.
- Sc in each stitch across to the center sc of the 3-sc corner from the previous round.
- In that center sc, work 3 sc to form a new corner.
- Repeat this process on all sides – sc in each stitch, and 3 sc in each corner’s center sc.
- When you complete the round, join with a sl st to the first sc.
Finishing
- Use a large-eyed blunt needle to weave in all loose ends.
- Smooth out the washcloth and block if desired for an even finish.
Helpful Tips
- When working along the row ends in Round 1 of the edging, aim for a stitch count that feels even and natural. Too few stitches will cause pulling, while too many can make the edges wavy.
- If you’re unsure about your stitch placement on the sides, it may help to place stitch markers in each corner after working 3 sc to keep track.
- You can make the washcloth in various colors for a fun, coordinated kitchen or bathroom set.
