Materials Needed & Measurements:
-
Main Fabric: 2 yards (1.8m) of 54″+ wide fabric (e.g., Italian floral silk charmeuse). Add 1 extra yard for directional prints or sizes above 10.
-
Alternative Fabrics: Silk georgette, crepe, satin, rayon satin, poly-satin, lightweight wool (crepe/suiting), gabardine, linen, or knits.
-
Elastic: 1 yard of 1″ (2.5cm) wide black elastic.
-
Sizing & Seams: Pattern fits up to size 30. Standard seam allowance is 1/2″ (1.3cm) throughout.
Instructions for Making the Indigo Skirt Pattern:
1. Cutting the Pattern
-
Cut fabric on a 45-degree angle (the bias) relative to the selvage to ensure proper drape and fullness.
-
Cut one front panel and two back panels. Align pattern grainlines precisely to prevent distorting the drape.
2. Assembling the Back Panels
-
Place the two back panels right sides together.
-
Stitch the center back seam using a French seam (a 1/4″ seam followed by another 1/4″ seam to enclose raw edges). Press lightly.
3. Joining Front and Back
-
Pin the front panel to the assembled back section at the side seams, right sides together.
-
Stitch side seams using French seams (or finish with a serger). Lightly press seams open or toward the back.
4. Constructing the Waistband Casing
-
Fold the top raw edge down 1/4″ toward the wrong side; press.
-
Fold down an additional 1″ (or the width of your elastic) to create the casing; pin.
-
Edge-stitch close to the inner folded edge, leaving a small opening at the center back seam to thread the elastic.
5. Inserting the Elastic
-
Cut your elastic 1″ to 2″ shorter than your natural waist measurement.
-
Thread the elastic through the waistband casing using a safety pin or bodkin.
-
Overlap and securely stitch the elastic ends together.
-
Stitch the casing opening closed and evenly distribute the waist gathers.
6. Hemming & Finishing
-
Try on the skirt to verify length. Adjust by adding length at the mid-thigh mark on the pattern or trimming the bottom hem before stitching.
-
Finish the lower edge with a 1/4″ rolled hem and give the entire garment a final press.
