Lacy Bookmark

Pattern Description:

This Easy pattern creates a stunning Lacy Crochet Bookmark that forms a long, thin rectangle. It is an ideal small, fast project, great for using scrap yarn.

The design utilizes basic stitches, such as Foundation Single Crochet, Single Crochet, Chains, Double Crochet, and Picots, in simple repeats to achieve a detailed, intricate look. The entire bookmark can be made once the simple stitch repeat is mastered.

Materials Needed & Measurements:

  • Hook: 3.75 mm hook
  • Yarn: #2 Fingering Weight Yarn. (The sources suggest using the lightest yarn comfortable. The designer used Circulo Cotton Yarns).
  • Quantity: 0.3 oz per Bookmark
  • Tools: Darning Needle and Scissors
  • Gauge: 1 repeat is 1-1/4” wide (6 sc sts).
  • Pattern Multiple: The pattern is worked in a multiple of 6 + 1 Fsc sts.
  • Finished Size: The one size written in the pattern instructions is 10” x 3”.

Stitch Abbreviations:

  • ch: Chain Stitch
  • st(s): Stitch(es)
  • sc: Single Crochet
  • dc: Double Crochet
  • sk: Skip
  • Picot: Ch 4, sl st into 4th ch from hook.
  • Fsc (Foundation Single Crochet): To perform an Fsc, begin by Ch 2.

Instructions for Making the Lacy Bookmark Pattern:

Foundation Row

Start: Begin with a multiple of 6 + 1 Fsc stitches. For a standard 10” bookmark, Fsc 37 (6 × 6 = 36 + 1). This creates a flexible foundation that won’t pull or curl.

Tip: If you prefer, you can chain 38 and work 1 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and across (37 sc total), but Fsc gives a cleaner edge.

Row 1: Establish Base

  • Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch).
  • Sc in each st across.
  • Turn.

(You’ll have 37 sc.)

This creates a firm edge to build the lace pattern.

Row 2: Begin Lace Pattern

  • Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc here and throughout).
  • Sk 2 sts, (dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc) in next st – forms a 3-dc cluster.
  • Sk 2 sts, sc in next st.
  • Repeat from to across the row, ending with a dc in the last st.
  • Turn.

(You should end with an even pattern of arches separated by sc stitches.)

Row 3: Second Lace Layer

  • Ch 1, sc in first dc.
  • Ch 3, sk next 2 dc, sc in center dc of next cluster.
  • Repeat from to across.
  • End with sc in top of turning ch-3.
  • Turn.

This row adds open chain spaces that create the airy texture of the lace.

Row 4: Cluster Reinforcement

  • Ch 3 (counts as dc).
  • In next ch-3 space, work (dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc).
  • Sk next sc, sc in next ch-3 space.
  • Repeat from to across, ending with dc in last sc.
  • Turn.

This repeats the decorative “shell” structure, forming the signature lace pattern.

Rows 5-22: Repeat Pattern

Repeat Rows 3 and 4 alternately until the piece measures approximately 10 inches or your desired length.

Ensure you end with a Row 4 for symmetry before adding the edging.

Final Row (Edging and Picot Trim)

To create a delicate decorative border:

  • Ch 1, sc evenly along the edge.
  • On the top edge: (Sc in next st, Picot, sc in next 2 sts) repeat across.
  • On the side edges: Work sc evenly spaced (around 2 per dc post).
  • On bottom edge: (Sc in next st, Picot, sc in next 2 sts) repeat across.
  • Join with a sl st to the first sc.
  • Fasten off and weave in ends with a darning needle.

Finishing Touches

  • Block the Bookmark: Lightly mist with water and pin to shape on a blocking mat. Stretch gently to emphasize the lacy openings and picots. Allow to dry completely before use.
  • Optional Tassel: Add a small tassel or bead at one corner for an elegant finish.

Tips for Success

  1. Yarn Choice: Lightweight cotton or bamboo yarn gives a crisp, defined lace.
  2. Tension: Maintain even tension to prevent the bookmark from curling.
  3. Customization: Adjust the length by adding or reducing pattern repeats.
  4. Stiffness: For a firmer finish, lightly spray with starch after blocking.

Your Lacy Crochet Bookmark is now complete.
