Crochet Boho Market Bag Pattern

Boho Market Bag

Constructed from three identical crochet squares worked in the round, this versatile Boho Market Bag combines practical utility with bohemian charm.

The textured motif relies on a mix of double crochets and mesh-like chain spaces that naturally expand each round into a sturdy, geometric fabric.

Once all three panels are complete, they are joined using back-loop slip stitches to form a deep, structured tote.

Long chain straps built directly into the top edges double as functional handles and anchors for decorative yarn tassels, making this dynamic project both easy to assemble and fully customizable in color.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step-by-Step Instructions

Motif Panels (Make 3)

  • Round 1: Form an adjustable magic ring. Chain 6 (serves as base double crochet plus chain-3 corner space). Into the ring, work [1 double crochet, chain 3] 3 times. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the initial double crochet. (4 double crochets, 4 corner chain-3 spaces)

  • Round 2: Slip stitch into the next stitch. Chain 3. Work [(1 double crochet, chain 3, 1 double crochet) in the corner stitch, 1 double crochet in each of the next 3 stitches] 3 times. Work (1 double crochet, chain 3, 1 double crochet) in the final corner stitch, then 1 double crochet into each of the remaining 2 stitches. Slip stitch to top of initial chain-3 to join. (20 double crochets, 4 chain-3 spaces)

  • Round 3: Slip stitch forward 1 stitch, chain 3, double crochet in next stitch. Work corner set (1 double crochet, chain 3, 1 double crochet) into corner stitch, double crochet in next 2 stitches, [chain 1, skip 1 stitch, double crochet in next] 2 times, double crochet in next stitch. Repeat from * to * 3 times. Finish with corner set, double crochet in next 2 stitches, chain 1, skip 1, double crochet, chain 1. Join with slip stitch to top of initial chain-3. (28 double crochets, 8 chain-1 spaces, 4 chain-3 spaces)

  • Rounds 4–5: Continue expanding the mesh grid pattern. Slip stitch 2 stitches forward, chain 3, and work double crochets along the solid edges while maintaining [chain 1, skip 1, double crochet] sequences along the mesh sections. Always place (1 double crochet, chain 3, 1 double crochet) into the central corner chain stitch of each previous corner.

  • Rounds 6–14: Keep building the square by increasing the solid double crochet blocks along the center of each side by 4 double crochets per round, surrounding them with standard mesh windows on either side. Maintain corner increases as established. Upon completing Round 14, finish off the yarn cleanly. Fasten off all three completed squares.

Bag Assembly

  1. Align Square 1 and Square 2 with right sides facing inward. Join yarn at any corner chain-3 space.

  2. Working through the back loops only of both layers, slip stitch along Side 1 and Side 2 to bind the panels together, stopping at the center corner stitch.

  3. Position Square 3 against the unjoined edges of Square 1 and Square 2. Continue back-loop slip stitching along Side 3 and Side 4 to complete the main body fold. Fasten off.

Handles & Finishing Tassels

  • Side 1 Handle: Leaving a 6-inch starting yarn tail, create a 30-chain length. Facing the right side of the bag, single crochet into the corner space between Square 1 and Square 4. Single crochet evenly across the top open edges of the bag panels to the opposite corner. Slip stitch back along the 30-chain length to reinforce the handle band. Fasten off, leaving a 6-inch tail.

  • Side 2 Handle: Mirror the steps from Side 1 on the remaining open top edge of the bag.

  • Tassels: Wind yarn around the 4-inch cardboard block roughly 50 times. Pass the 6-inch handle yarn tails through the top loop of the wound yarn and knot securely. Cut the bottom loops free, remove the cardboard, and bind the neck of the tassel 1 inch below the top join using a separate 12-inch strand of yarn. Trim ends evenly. Repeat for the second handle tassel.
