Pattern Description:
This is an easy crochet pattern for a can cozy that can be completed in under an hour. It uses cotton yarn and the moss stitch (also called linen or granite stitch) to create a durable, absorbent cozy that keeps drinks cold and tabletops dry. The pattern can be adapted for standard or slim-style cans.
Materials Needed & Measurements:
- Yarn: Worsted weight (CYC 4) cotton yarn, such as Lily Sugar’n Cream. Other worsted weight yarns like acrylic can be substituted.
- Yarn Weight: Worsted weight (CYC 4).
- Hook: 5mm (H) crochet hook.
- Notions: Darning or tapestry needle.
- Measurements: The standard cozy measures 3″ (7.5 cm) in diameter x 4″ (10 cm) tall. The gauge for the bottom circle (Rounds 1-5) should be 3″ (7.5 cm).
Stitches & Abbreviations Used:
- A, B = Color A, Color B
- ch = chain(s)
- sc = single crochet
- st(s) = stitch(es)
Instructions for Making the Crochet Can Cozy Pattern:
The pattern begins by creating a flat circular base, then transitions to working the sides in the round using the moss stitch.
Starting the Cozy: The Magic Circle

- Begin with your main color (A).
- Create a Magic Circle. (A tutorial for making a Magic Circle is available if you are unfamiliar with this technique).
Creating the Base (Rounds 1-5)

These rounds form the bottom of your can cozy. The stitch count at the end of each round is indicated in parentheses.
- Round 1: Into the Magic Circle, work 6 single crochet (sc) stitches. Pull the loop tightly to close the circle. Join with a slip st in the first sc. (6 sts)
- Round 2: Chain 1. Make 2 sc in each stitch (st) around. Join with a slip st in the first sc. (12 sts)
- Round 3: Chain 1. Sc in the first st. Work 2 sc in the next st. Repeat the sequence of “sc in next st, 2 sc in next st” around the remainder of the round. Join with a slip st in the first sc. (18 sts)
- Round 4: Chain 1. Work 2 sc in the first st. Sc in the next 2 sts. Repeat the sequence of “2 sc in next st, sc in the next 2 sts” around. Join with a slip st in the first sc. (24 sts)
- Slim Can Variation Note: If you are making a cozy for a slim or skinny-style can, you should finish the bottom circle after this Round 4 (at 24 stitches). For slim cans, you will then skip Round 5 and proceed directly to Round 6 to work the sides of the can, maintaining 24 stitches for the body instead of 30.
- Round 5 (For Standard Cans Only): Chain 1. Sc in the first 3 sts. Work 2 sc in the next st. Repeat the sequence of “sc in next 3 st, 2 sc in next st” around. Join with a slip st in the first st. (30 sts)
Transition to Sides (Round 6)

This round creates the slight ridge that defines the bottom edge of the cozy.
- Round 6: Chain 1. Working in back loops only, sc in each st around. Join with a slip st in the first st. (30 sts)
Working the Moss Stitch Pattern (Rounds 7-21)

This section begins the main body of the cozy using the moss stitch pattern. The moss stitch involves an alternating pattern of chain stitches and single crochet stitches.
- Round 7 (Start of Moss Stitch): Chain 2. Skip the very first stitch. Sc in the next st. Repeat the sequence of “ch 1, skip next st, sc in the next st” around. The last stitch you make in this round should be a sc. Join with a slip st into the chain space created at the beginning of the round. (This round results in 15 sc stitches and 15 ch-1 spaces, effectively maintaining the 30-stitch count if you consider both types of components).
- Round 8: Chain 1. Sc in the first ch-1 space. Chain 1. Skip the next st. Repeat the sequence of “sc in the next ch-1 space, ch 1, skip the next st” around. The last element of the round should be a ch 1. Join with a slip st into the first sc of the round. (30 sts)
- Rounds 9-14: For these rounds, you will repeat Rounds 7 and 8 consecutively using the main color (A). At the end of Round 14, you will change to your contrast color (B).
- Round 15: Repeat Round 7, now using the contrast color (B).
- Round 16: Repeat Round 8, switching back to the main color (A).
- Round 17: Repeat Round 7, using the contrast color (B).
- Round 18: Repeat Round 8, switching back to the main color (A).
- Rounds 19-21: Continue repeating, alternating Rounds 7 and 8, but now using the contrast color (B) for these final rounds of the body.
Finishing the Cozy

Once you have completed all the rounds for the body of the cozy:
- Fasten off your yarn.
- Carefully weave in all loose ends using your darning or tapestry needle.
This completes your crochet can cozy, designed to keep beverages cold and protect surfaces from condensation.
