Dreamland Pillowcase

Pattern Description:

The Dreamland Pillowcase is a sewing project for a standard-size bed pillow, finished at 30-3/4 × 21 inches.

It is made using basic piecing and cute novelty prints. The fabrics specified are from the Believe in Magic collection by Sandra Will for Northcott.

The pattern was inspired by Keep On Turning from designer Jeni Baker of In Color Order, and features a finished block size of 6 inches square.

Materials Needed & Measurements:

Yardages and cutting instructions are based on 42 inches of usable fabric width. Seam allowances for piecing blocks are 1/4 inch, and for pillowcase construction are 1/2 inch.

Required Materials:

  • White novelty print (for pillowcase band and body): 1 1/4 yards
  • Black novelty print (for pillowcase band): 1/8 yard each
  • Pink star print (for pillowcase band): 1/8 yard each
  • Pink stripe (for pillowcase band): 10-inch square
  • Black star print (for pillowcase band): 9 × 21-inch piece (fat eighth)

Instructions for Making the Dreamland Pillowcase Pattern:

Cut Fabrics

  • From the white novelty print, cut:
    • 1 – 26 × 43-inch rectangle
    • 1 – 6-1/2 × 42-1/2-inch strip
    • 4 – 3-1/2-inch squares
  • From the black novelty print, cut: 7 – 3-1/2-inch squares
  • From the pink stripe, cut: 3 – 3-1/2-inch squares
  • From the pink star print, cut: 8 – 2 × 6-1/2-inch rectangles
  • From the black star print, cut: 6 – 2 × 6-1/2-inch rectangles

Assemble Band

  • Create White Center Units: Sew together one white novelty print 3-1/2-inch square and one black novelty print 3-1/2-inch square.

This unit forms a white center unit (finished 3-1/2 × 6-1/2 inches including seam allowances). Repeat to make four white center units.

  • Create Pink Center Units: Repeat step 1 using the remaining black novelty print squares and pink stripe squares. This produces three pink center units.
  • Create White Blocks: Sew together one white center unit and two pink star print 2 × 6-1/2-inch rectangles. The resulting white block is 6-1/2 inches square including seam allowances. Make four white blocks.
  • Create Black Blocks: Repeat step 3 with the three pink center units and the black star print 2 × 6-1/2-inch rectangles. Make three black blocks.
  • Assemble Pieced Row: Arrange the white and black blocks in a single row, alternating them. Sew together and press seams toward the white blocks. The completed pieced row should measure 6-1/2 × 42-1/2 inches including seam allowances.
  • Attach Row to Strip: Join the pieced row to the white novelty print 6-1/2 × 42-1/2-inch rectangle.
  • Form Band Loop: Join the short ends to form a continuous loop. Press the seam open. Fold the loop in half, wrong sides together, and press.

Assemble Pillowcase

  • Construct Pillowcase Body: Take the white novelty print 26 × 43-inch rectangle and fold it in half to create a 26 × 21-1/2-inch rectangle. Using a 1/2-inch seam allowance, sew the long edges and one short edge. Turn right side out and press flat.
  • Attach the Band: Slide the assembled band over the pillowcase body, right sides together. Align raw edges and seams, pin, and sew together.
  • Finishing: Press the pillowcase band open toward the pillowcase body. Topstitch 1/8 inch from the band edge to secure the seam allowance.
