Stitching Instructions for Making the Modish Mosaic Mittens Pattern:
Foundation:
- Ch 24 (Toddler) or Ch 28 (Child) to start, depending on the size you’re making.
- Join the chain with a sl st (slip stitch) into the first chain, ensuring you don’t twist the chain. This forms a ring.
- Move on to the next round.
Mosaic Pattern (Worked in the Round):
- Round 1:
- Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), sc (single crochet) in each stitch around (24 stitches for Toddler, 28 for Child). Join with a sl st to the first sc.
- (Use a stitch marker if necessary to mark the beginning of each round to keep track of your work.)
- Round 2:
- Ch 1, skip the first st, sc in the next st; repeat from * to the end of the round.
- Join with a sl st to the first sc.
- Round 3:
- Ch 2 (counts as the first dc), skip the first st, sc in the next st; repeat from * to the end of the round.
- Join with a sl st to the beginning of the round.
- Round 4:
- Ch 1, skip the first st, sc in the next st; repeat from * to the end of the round.
- Join with a sl st to the first sc.
- Repeat Rounds 1-4 as established until the mitten reaches your desired length for the palm, excluding the cuff area.
Thumb Opening:
- After completing the palm section, leave a gap for the thumb:
- For Toddler size, skip 4 stitches where the thumb opening will be.
- For Child size, skip 5 stitches.
- Continue crocheting around the mitten, but do not work into the skipped stitches. The space you leave will form the thumb hole.
Mosaic Band (Cuff):
- Round 1 (Cuff):
- Switch to Yarn B (or your chosen color for the cuff).
- Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), sc blo (single crochet in the back loop only) around in each stitch.
- This creates a nice ribbed effect.
- Join with a sl st to the first sc.
- Round 2 (Cuff):
- Ch 1, sc blo in each st around.
- Join with a sl st to the first sc.
- Repeat Rounds 1-2 of the cuff until the cuff is the desired length. For a snug fit, you can make the cuff slightly longer, and for a looser, more relaxed fit, make it shorter.
Finishing:
- Close the top of the mitten:
- After completing the cuff, ch 1 and sc around the top opening.
- Use a yarn needle and Yarn A to gather the remaining stitches at the top of the mitten and sew them together to form a closed end. This creates a rounded mitten tip.
- Weave in all loose ends using your yarn needle.
Thumb:
- Attach Yarn A (or B if preferred) at the space you left open for the thumb.
- Work in the round around the thumb opening, sc into each stitch around the thumb space.
- Continue crocheting in the round for a few rounds (depending on how long you want the thumb) until it’s the desired length.
- Close the thumb by sewing the thumb stitches together using the yarn needle.
