Summer Mint Crochet Trivet

This beginner-friendly pattern creates a thick, heat-resistant kitchen trivet with a fresh, geometric look. Using thick t-shirt yarn allows the project to come together in just six quick rounds.

The main body features a textured moss-stitch variation in mint green, while a contrasting coral or yellow border adds a bright pop of color.

Working with T-Shirt Yarn

• Tension: This yarn is elastic. Avoid pulling or tugging tightly while stitching to prevent the trivet from warping or curling.

• Thinner Sections: If the yarn thickness drops significantly in certain sections, work a decrease (crochet two stitches together) to prevent gaps.

• Factory Knots: Do not rely on pre-existing knots in the skein. Untie them and either sew the ends together or tie a secure double knot to ensure it doesn’t unravel during washing.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Note: Throughout the main body, every Half Double Crochet is worked directly into the chain-1 spaces of the previous round rather than into the loops of the stitches.

Main Body

Using the Jade Isle yarn, start by forming a Magic Circle.

• Round 1: Work alternating pairs of [1 hdc, ch 1] inside the magic circle a total of 8 times. Pull the circle closed and secure it with a sl st into the top of your very first stitch. (16 stitches total, counting both stitches and chains)

• Round 2: Ch 1. In every single ch-1 space from the previous round, work [1 hdc, ch 1] two times to increase. Close the round with a sl st into the first stitch. (32 stitches)

• Round 3: Ch 1. In the first ch-1 space, work an increase of [1 hdc, ch 1] twice. In the next ch-1 space, work [1 hdc, ch 1] just once. Repeat the sequence between the asterisks all the way around. Join with a sl st into the first stitch. (48 stitches)

• Round 4: Ch 1. Work [1 hdc, ch 1] once into each of the first two ch-1 spaces. In the third ch-1 space, work an increase of [1 hdc, ch 1] twice. Repeat this pattern around. Join with a sl st into the first stitch. (64 stitches)

• Round 5: Ch 1. Work an increase of [1 hdc, ch 1] twice into the first ch-1 space. Work [1 hdc, ch 1] once into each of the next three ch-1 spaces. Repeat this pattern around. Join with a sl st into the first stitch. Fasten off the green yarn. (80 stitches)

The Border

Attach either the Yellow Florida or Dusty Coral yarn to any ch-1 space from the previous round.

• Round 6: Ch 1. Work [1 sc, ch 1] into every ch-1 space around the entire perimeter. (80 stitches)

Seamless Finishing Technique

To create a clean, professional edge without a bulky knot:

1. Drop the working loop from your crochet hook.

2. Insert your hook from the back to the front of the very first single crochet of this round.

3. Catch the dropped loop with your hook and pull it completely through to the back side of the trivet.

4. Cut the yarn, pull the tail through to secure, and weave in all loose ends tightly using your tapestry needle.
