Instructions for Making the Waves of Hope Hat Pattern:

Getting Started: Casting On and Joining

The first step is to establish your stitches and prepare for knitting in the round:

  • Cast on 84 stitches. Ensure these stitches are cast on evenly.
  • Place a stitch marker (PM) after the last cast-on stitch. This marker indicates the beginning of each round.
  • Carefully join your stitches in the round, taking extra care to prevent any twists in your stitches. This ensures your work forms a continuous tube.

Ribbing Section

Once joined, you will work a ribbing section to create a stretchy and snug brim for your hat:

  • Round 1-6: Work P2, K2 to the end of each round. This means you will purl two stitches, then knit two stitches, and repeat this sequence across all 84 stitches in the round for a total of 6 rounds.

Commence Lace Section

After completing the ribbing, you will begin the main body of the hat, which features a repeating ten-round lace pattern:

  • Round 1: K to the end of the round. (Knit every stitch).
  • Round 2: (K4, K2tog, YO) repeat to the end of the round. (Knit four, knit two stitches together, yarn over).
  • Round 3: K to the end of the round. (Knit every stitch).
  • Round 4: (K3, K2tog, K1, YO) repeat to the end of the round. (Knit three, knit two stitches together, knit one, yarn over).
  • Round 5: K to the end of the round. (Knit every stitch).
  • Round 6: (K2, K2tog, K2, YO) repeat to the end of the round. (Knit two, knit two stitches together, knit two, yarn over).
  • Round 7: K to the end of the round. (Knit every stitch).
  • Round 8: (K1, K2tog, K3, YO) repeat to the end of the round. (Knit one, knit two stitches together, knit three, yarn over).
  • Round 9: K to the end of the round. (Knit every stitch).
  • Round 10: (K2tog, K4, YO) repeat to the end of the round. (Knit two stitches together, knit four, yarn over).

Repeating the Lace Pattern

To achieve the full length of the hat, you will repeat the entire ten-round lace pattern multiple times:

  • Repeat these 10 rounds three more times. This means you will work Rounds 1-10 a total of four times (one initial set, plus three repeats).
  • Alternatively, you may repeat these 10 rounds until you reach the desired length for your hat, ensuring that you end on Round 1 of the lace pattern.

Crown Shaping

Once the body of the hat is complete, you will begin decreasing stitches to shape the crown. At this stage, you may need to switch to DPNs as the number of stitches decreases and your circular needles become too long.

  • Round 1: (K4, K2tog) repeat to the end of the round. (Knit four, knit two stitches together).
  • Round 2: K to the end of the round. (Knit every stitch).
  • Round 3: (K3, K2tog) repeat to the end of the round. (Knit three, knit two stitches together).
  • Round 4: K to the end of the round. (Knit every stitch).
  • Round 5: (K2, K2tog) repeat to the end of the round. (Knit two, knit two stitches together).
  • Round 6: K to the end of the round. (Knit every stitch).
  • Round 7: (K1, K2tog) repeat to the end of the round. (Knit one, knit two stitches together).
  • Round 8: K to the end of the round. (Knit every stitch).
  • Round 9: K2tog to the end of the round. (Knit two stitches together across all remaining stitches).

Finishing

The final steps involve securing your stitches and weaving in any loose ends:

  • Cut your yarn, leaving a tail of sufficient length to work with.
  • Using your darning needle, thread the yarn tail through all the remaining stitches on your needles.
  • Gently pull the tail to draw the stitches together, closing the top of the hat.
  • Sew in all remaining ends neatly.
