Instructions for Making the Very Shelley Bookmark Pattern

Starting the Bookmark

Begin your work by making a foundation chain of 45 stitches (ch 45) using your 3.25 mm hook. This number fits the pattern repeat of six plus one, which ensures the shell pattern aligns correctly on both sides.

Working the First Side

Start by working into the third chain from the hook. Into this chain, make four double crochets (4 dc). This forms the first group of stitches and counts as the initial shell section of your pattern.

Now continue the main stitch sequence across the first side of the chain. The repeating section is as follows: Skip two stitches (sk 2), make a single crochet (sc) into the next stitch, skip another two stitches (sk 2), and then make one shell (5 dc into the same stitch).

Repeat this sequence six times along the chain. This series of skipped stitches, single crochets, and shells creates the flowing scalloped edge that defines the bookmark’s design.

Transition to the Second Side

When you reach the end of the first side, make one more shell into the same stitch as the last shell you worked.

This step forms the rounded edge at the bottom of the bookmark, allowing you to begin crocheting up the other side of the chain.

Next, turn your work slightly to begin along the opposite side of the starting chain. Using the same repeat sequence, work the second side as follows: Skip two stitches (sk 2), make one single crochet (sc) into the next stitch, skip two stitches (sk 2), and then work one shell (5 dc in the same stitch).

Repeat this sequence six more times along the second side until you reach the beginning point of your work. The bookmark should now have a smooth oval shape, with an identical row of shells running along each side.

Joining and Creating the Tail

To complete the main body, join both sides together with a slip stitch (slst) into the first stitch you made at the beginning of the pattern. This secures the edges neatly and completes the main oval section.

To form the decorative tail, chain 10 (ch 10) from the joining point. This chain can later hold a tassel, bead, or button, depending on your preference. Once the tail is the desired length, secure it firmly.

Finally, finish off (fo) your work by cutting the yarn, pulling it through the last loop, and tightening gently to close.

Finishing Touches

Use your yarn needle to weave in all loose ends carefully on the back of the work. Trim any excess yarn for a clean finish. If desired, lightly block the bookmark by dampening it and pinning it flat to shape the shells more clearly.

Add your chosen embellishment – a small tassel, bead, or button – to the end of the tail to personalize the bookmark. Make sure the decorative element is securely attached so it withstands use without loosening.
