This project uses tapestry crochet to create a solid, heat-resistant potholder featuring a stylized rooster silhouette. By carrying the unused color along inside your stitches, you will create a sturdy, reversible fabric. The design begins with a foundational grid worked in flat rows, followed by a crisp two-toned border that frames the artwork and adds a functional hanging loop.

Required Materials

  • Hook Size: 3.0 mm (US D/3)

  • Yarn: Light worsted weight / DK cotton yarn in two highly contrasting shades.

    • Main Background (Color A): ~55 yards (50 meters)

    • Pattern Motif (Color B): ~35 yards (32 meters)

  • Tools: Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn tails

Finishing Border & Hanging Loop

You will now work in rounds along the outer perimeter of your square piece starting from the top corner.

  • Round 1 [RS]: Attach Color B. Work 45 single crochets evenly along all four edges of the fabric. When you reach a corner, make 1 single crochet in the final stitch of that side, chain 1, then place 1 single crochet into the first stitch of the next side. Slip stitch into your initial stitch to close the round.

  • Round 2 [RS]: Switch to Color A. Single crochet into every stitch around the edge. When you reach the corner spaces, work [1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc] directly into the chain-1 space from the previous round.

Creating the Loop:

When you return to the top corner where your round started:

  1. Work 1 single crochet into the corner chain-1 space.

  2. Chain 20, then secure it back into the exact same corner space with a single crochet to form a large ring.

  3. Turn your work around and crochet 25 single crochets directly over the chain loop to reinforce it.

  4. Slip stitch back down into the corner space, turn, tie off your yarn, and weave all remaining tails securely into the stitches.
