The Love Knot Crochet Market Bag combines light breathability with high durability, making it an ideal accessory for everyday errands or beach trips.
Using lightweight yarn and the distinctive Solomon’s Knot stitch, this design creates a beautiful, expandable mesh texture anchored by a sturdy base and reinforced handles.
By working the central body as a flat rectangle, gathering the ends to form the main structure, and completing the edge trim and straps in one continuous movement, you build an elegant yet practical tote. Follow these steps to construct your own custom bag.

Special Stitch Technique
To execute one Solomon’s Knot (SK): draw up a long loop measuring roughly 0.5 inches (1.25 cm).
Chain 1 to lock the loop. Insert your hook under the single back thread of that elongated loop, yarn over, and pull up a loop. Yarn over once more and pull through both loops to complete a single crochet.
Step 1: Main Mesh Body
-
Base Chain: Begin with 98 chain stitches.
-
Row 1: Place 1 sc into the second chain from the hook. *Work 2 SK, skip 3 chain stitches, and place 1 sc into the next chain. Repeat from * across the foundation row, ending with 1 sc in the last chain stitch. Turn. [24 SK pairs]
-
Row 2: Chain 4 (acts as a treble crochet). Work 1 SK. Skip the first single crochet and the first SK loop, then place 1 sc into the central single crochet of the first knot pair. *Work 2 SK, skip the next 2 knot loops, then place 1 sc in the central single crochet. Repeat from * until 1 knot loop and 1 single crochet remain. Work 1 SK, skip the remaining knot loop, and end with 1 tr into the final single crochet. Turn.
-
Row 3: Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch). Place 1 sc in the top of the initial treble stitch. *Work 2 SK, skip 2 knot loops, and place 1 sc into the central single crochet. Repeat from * across, ending with 1 sc placed directly into the top of the turning chain-4. Turn. [24 SK pairs]
-
Rows 4–48: Alternate Row 2 and Row 3 until you reach Row 48, ending on a Row 2 repeat.
-
Row 49: Chain 1, 1 sc in the initial treble stitch. *Chain 3 loosely, skip 2 knot loops, 1 sc into the central single crochet. Repeat from * across, finishing with 1 sc in the turning chain. Fasten off and block the rectangular piece to set the mesh pattern.
Step 2: Cinch the Opening (Top & Bottom Edges)
-
Top Edge:
-
Row 1: Chain 1, 1 sc in the first stitch. *Work 2 sc into the chain-3 space, then 1 sc into the next single crochet. Repeat from * across to the end. Turn. [73 sts]
-
Row 2: Chain 1, 1 sc in the first stitch. *Work sc2tog across the next 2 stitches. Repeat from * across. Turn. [37 sts]
-
Row 3: Chain 1, 1 sc in the first stitch. *Work sc2tog across the next 2 stitches, followed by 1 sc in the next stitch. Repeat from * across. Turn. [25 sts]
-
Rows 4–9: Chain 1, work 1 sc into every stitch across. Turn at the end of each row. Fasten off after Row 9.
-
-
Bottom Edge:
-
Orient your fabric to the opposite edge and attach yarn on the far right corner beneath the base of Row 1.
-
Row 1: Chain 1, place 1 sc in the base corner, then *work 2 sc into the chain-3 loop space and 1 sc into the base of the next stitch. Repeat from * across. Turn. [73 sts]
-
Rows 2–9: Repeat Rows 2 through 9 of the Top Edge instructions. Do not cut yarn after Row 9.
-
Step 3: Side Panels and Integrated Straps
Turn your fabric clockwise to work along the side edges in continuous rounds without turning.
-
Round 1: Chain 1. Work 1 sc into each row end along the solid 9-row band (9 sts total). Place 1 sc into the side of the next stitch, then *work 2 sc around the side of the treble space and 1 sc into the side of the single crochet stitch. Repeat from * down to the next solid band, then work 1 sc into each row end of that band (9 sts). Chain 80 loosely to form the first shoulder strap, then skip 25 stitches across the top edge. Continue along the second side: work 9 sc across the band, repeat the mesh edge sequence (2 sc in treble space, 1 sc in stitch), and work 9 sc across the final band. Chain 80 loosely for the second strap, skip 25 stitches, and slip stitch to the first single crochet.
-
Round 2: Chain 1. Work 1 sc in each of the first 9 sts. *Work sc2tog across the next 2 sts. Repeat from * until 9 sts remain before the chain-80 strap. Work 1 sc in each of those 9 sts, place 1 sc in each of the 80 chain stitches, then work 1 sc in the next 10 sts. Repeat the sc2tog decrease pattern across the side mesh section until 9 sts remain before the next strap. Work 1 sc in each of those 9 sts, then 1 sc into each chain of the second strap. [270 total sts]
-
Round 3: Place 1 sc in every stitch around the entire bag perimeter and straps. Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch.
Fasten off the yarn, weave in all loose ends securely, and your market bag is ready for use.
