Stitching Instructions for Making the Crochet Sweater Dress Pattern:

Top Ribbing (Neckline):

  • Ch 10 (XS-S-M) or Ch 12 (L-XL-XXL).
  • Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (9-11 sc)
    • You should have a small foundation row of sc.
  • Row 2-8: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across.
    • Repeat this for a total of 8 rows (or more for a longer ribbing).
  • Fasten off the yarn after completing the ribbing.

Joining the Ribbing:

  • Fold the ribbing in half to form a loop.
  • Sl st across the two ends of the ribbing to join.
    • Sl st: Insert hook into both edges of the ribbing, yarn over, pull through, and pull through the loop on your hook.
  • Now you have a tube-like shape for the neckline.

Top of the Dress (Bust and Waist Area):

  • Round 1: Join yarn to the center back of the ribbing.
    • Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc). Work dc evenly around the ribbing.
    • To do this: Insert your hook into the base of the ribbing, yarn over, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through the remaining 2 loops.
  • Join the round with a sl st to the top of the ch 3.
  • Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc). Dc in each dc around.
    • For the second round, you will continue working dc stitches in each stitch from the previous round.
  • Repeat for 4-5 rounds, or until the bust area reaches your desired length.

Waist Shaping:

  • Round 1:
    • Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc).
    • Dc in next 2 sts, then dec (2 dc together).
    • Dc in next 2 sts, then dec.
    • Repeat the pattern (dc, dc, dec) around the entire round.
    • This round will shape the waist by decreasing the number of stitches gradually.
  • Round 2-4:
    • Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc).
    • Dc in each dc around, working evenly without further decreases.
    • Continue this for 2-3 more rounds, depending on your size and desired fit.

Skirt of the Dress:

  • Round 1 (Start of Skirt):
    • Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), then dc in the next stitch.
    • Continue with dc around.
    • Every 4th stitch, Inc by working 2 dc in the same stitch.
    • This increase will flare out the skirt.
  • Round 2:
    • Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc).
    • Dc in the next stitch, then dc in each of the next 4 stitches.
    • Inc in the next stitch.
    • Continue around, adding increases in every 5th stitch.
  • Round 3:
    • Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc).
    • Dc in the next 5 stitches, then Inc (2 dc in the next stitch).
    • Repeat around.
  • Continue increasing the number of dc between each increase round after round.
    • Add more increases as the skirt grows out, until the bottom flares out to the size you want.
    • You may switch to the contrast color for a more colorful effect.

Finishing the Skirt:

  • Round for Hem:
    • Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), sc in each stitch around the entire bottom of the skirt.
    • The sc will provide a tight and neat finish.
  • Final Round:
    • Sl st in each sc around to ensure that the hem is flat and well-formed.
    • Fasten off.

Sleeves (Optional):

  • Round 1 (For Sleeves):
    • Attach yarn at the underarm (where the body meets the sleeve opening).
    • Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), then dc around the sleeve opening evenly.
  • Round 2-4: Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc in each dc around until sleeve reaches desired length.
  • Final Round:
    • Sc around the sleeve edge for a tight cuff.
    • Fasten off.

Finishing Touches:

  • Weave in all loose ends using a tapestry needle to secure the yarn and tidy up the project.
  • Steam block the dress if necessary. Lay it out flat and apply a light steam to help the dress maintain its shape.
  • Try it on to ensure the fit is just right. Adjust the waist or bust area if needed by adding or removing rounds.

Your crochet sweater dress is now ready to wear.
