Instructions for Making the Dumbo Octopus Amigurumi Pattern:
Body Instructions
The body is worked in the round, without joining the rounds. You will start with an adjustable ring, or by chaining 2 and working in the first chain.
Using the larger hook (3.75 mm / F hook):
- Work 6 sc in a circle.
- Work (2 sc in next st) 6 times. You should have 12 sc.
- Work (sc in next st, 2 sc in next st) 6 times. You should have 18 sc.
- Work (sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next st) 6 times. You should have 24 sc.
- For rounds 5 through 8, sc in each st around, for 4 rounds. You should have 24 sc per round.
- For round 9, working in front loops only, work (sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next st) 8 times. You should have 32 sc.
- Note: After this round, go back to working through both loops for the rest of the pattern.
- For round 10, work (sc in next st, 3 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts) 8 times. You should have 48 sts.
- For round 11, work (sc in next 2 sts, 5 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts) 8 times. You should have 80 sts.
Join the last round with a slip stitch. Then, cut the yarn, fasten off, and weave in the yarn tail. At this stage, your octopus should resemble a small sunhat.
Ears Instructions (Make 2)
For the ears, you will use the smaller hook (3.5 mm / E hook).
- Chain 4.
- Cut the yarn, leaving a tail for sewing, and finish off.
- The ears are formed by sewing both ends of the crochet chain onto the head, creating a very small loop.
- Sew the ears onto the top of your amigurumi, between the 2nd and 3rd rounds of the body.
- Since the body has not yet been stuffed, you can knot the ends on the inside to secure the ears in place.
Face Instructions
Now it’s time to add the face details.
- Sew the eyes in place, or attach safety eyes if you are using them.
- Attach the eyes between the 7th and 8th rounds of the body, positioning them approximately 7 stitches apart.
- If desired, you can add a small mouth by sewing a small, straight stitch in between the eyes.
Bottom Instructions
You will create a new piece to close up the bottom of your amigurumi.
Using the smaller hook (3.5 mm / E hook) and a contrasting color yarn:
- Start with an adjustable ring, or chain 2 and work in the first chain.
- Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing, and finish off.
