Stitching Instructions for Making Harvest Turtleneck Poncho Pattern:
Step 1: Base Panel
- Foundation Chain: Start by making a foundation chain according to your desired size:
- S/M: Ch 82
- L/XL: Ch 90
- 2XL/3XL: Ch 98
- 4XL/5XL: Ch 106
- Ensure the chain is loosely made to avoid tightness in the stitch count.
- Row 1: Dc in the 4th ch from the hook (this counts as your first dc), and dc in each ch across.
- Total stitches for each size:
- S/M: 80
- L/XL: 88
- 2XL/3XL: 96
- 4XL/5XL: 104
- Total stitches for each size:
- Row 2: Ch 3 (this counts as your first dc), sk the first st, and dc in each of the next sts across. Turn.
- You are skipping the first st because the ch 3 counts as a dc, keeping the row even.
- Row 3 and beyond: Continue to ch 3 at the start of each row, then dc in each st across. Turn your work at the end of each row. Repeat until the desired length is reached.
- Length:
- S/M: 23″
- L/XL: 24″
- 2XL/3XL: 25″
- 4XL/5XL: 26″
- Length:
- Finishing the Base Panel: Once you reach the required length, do not fasten off yet; you will use the last row’s stitches to begin the turtleneck.
Step 2: Turtleneck
- Attach Yarn to Top Edge: Attach your yarn to the center of the top edge of the poncho.
- Row 1 (Turtleneck Base): Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in the next 23 sts (total of 24 dc for this row). Turn.
- Row 2 and beyond: Ch 3, dc in each st across. Turn.
- Repeat for a total of 14 rows or until your turtleneck reaches your desired height.
- This section will form the folded-over neck, so you may adjust the length depending on your preferred fit.
- Join the Turtleneck: Fold the turtleneck portion in half lengthwise so the right sides are facing each other. Use sl st to join the two edges together, making a tube.
Step 3: Side Button Detail
- Mark Button Placement: Use stitch markers to mark where the buttons will go. The markers should be spaced evenly about 4-6″ apart on either side of the poncho. These will be your buttonhole positions.
- Creating Button Loops:
- At each stitch marker, ch 5, then sl st into the same st to create a loop.
- Fasten off the yarn at each button loop, leaving a small tail to weave in.
- Sewing Buttons: On the opposite side of the poncho, sew the buttons in alignment with the button loops. You can sew them in place using a yarn needle and matching yarn.
Step 4: Finishing Touches
- Weaving in Ends: Using your yarn needle, weave in all loose yarn ends from your work. Make sure to secure all threads to avoid any unraveling.
- Blocking: Lightly block the poncho to ensure that the fabric lies flat and even. This helps give your poncho a polished look and evens out any tension inconsistencies.
- Try On: Once the poncho is complete, try it on for fit and style! You should now have a warm, cozy, and stylish poncho perfect for colder weather.
Additional Notes:
- Sizing Adjustments: If you’d like to adjust the size of the poncho, increase or decrease the foundation chain in multiples of 2 to maintain the pattern’s symmetry. The turtleneck height can also be adjusted for a looser or more fitted style.
- Yarn Choice: For a softer feel, consider using a plush or boucle yarn that will give the poncho a cozy, textured look.
