Octopus Cupcake Amigurumi Pattern

Materials Needed & Measurements:

  • Yarn: Sport weight acrylic yarn in white, light pink, dark pink, and red (optional brown for frosting).
  • Hook: 2.5–3.5 mm
  • Eyes: 4 mm safety eyes or flat-back black beads.
  • Thread: Black and pink embroidery thread (for details and blush).
  • Filling: Polyester fiberfill.
  • Needle: Tapestry needle for sewing parts together.
  • Finished Pattern Size: Approximately 3–4 inches tall.
  • Tentacles: Eight popcorn stitch tentacles forming a flower shape.

Abbreviations:

  • ch – Chain
  • sc – Single crochet
  • sl st – Slip stitch
  • dc – Double crochet
  • dec – Single crochet two stitches together
  • rep – Repeat

Special Stitches:

  • Popcorn Stitch:
    • 5 double crochet in the same stitch, pull the loop off the hook, reinsert into the top of the first dc, grab the loop, pull through, and secure with a chain.

Stitching Instructions for MAking the Octopus Cupcake Amigurumi Pattern:

Head:

  • Using light pink yarn:
  • R1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  • R2: 2 sc in each st around. (12)
  • R3: sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, rep ** around. (18)
  • R4: sc in next 2 st, 2 sc in next st, rep ** around. (24)
  • R5: sc in next 3 st, 2 sc in next st, rep ** around. (30)
  • R6-R10: sc in each st around. (30)
  • R11: sc in next 3 st, 1 dec in next st, rep ** around. (24)
  • R12:sc in next 2 st, 1 dec in next st, rep ** around. (18)
    • Insert safety eyes between R9 and R10, leaving 5 stitches between them.
  • R13:sc in next st, 1 dec in next st, rep ** around. (12)
    • Stuff the head firmly.
  • R14: dec around. (6) Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Tentacles (Popcorn Stitch):

  • Using dark pink yarn:
  • R1: 8 sc in a magic ring. (8)
  • R2: 2 sc in each st around. (16)
  • Sl st to the next st, then make a popcorn stitch in the same st:
    • ch 3 (counts as dc), 4 dc in the same st, remove the hook from the loop, insert it into the top of the first dc, grab the dropped loop, pull through, and ch 1 to secure.
  • Skip 1 st, make a popcorn stitch in the next st, rep ** 6 more times.
  • Sl st to the first st. You will have 8 popcorn stitches forming a flower shape.

Whipped Cream:

Using white yarn:

  • Foundation Chain: ch 36.
  • Work 2 sc in the second chain from the hook and in each remaining ch. (70)
  • Leave a long tail for sewing.
  • Roll the strip into a spiral shape like a rose and sew it together using a tapestry needle.

Cherry:

  • Using red yarn:
  • R1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  • R2: sc in next st, 2 sc in the next st, rep ** around. (9)
  • R3: sc in each st around. (9)
  • R4:sc in next st, 1 dec in the next st, rep ** around. (6)
    • Stuff the cherry firmly with fiberfill.
  • Close the opening with a tapestry needle and leave a long tail for sewing.

Optional Frosting:

  • Using brown yarn:
  • R1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  • R2: 2 sc in each st around. (12)
  • R3: sc in next st, 2 sc in the next st, rep ** around. (18)
  • Sl st in the next st, then:
    • ch 4, sc in the second ch from the hook and in the next 2 ch, sl st in the next 3 st, ch 3, sc in the second ch from the hook and in the next ch, sl st in the next 3 st, rep ** 2 more times.

Assembling the Octopus Cupcake:

  • Sew the tentacles to the base of the head.
  • Attach the frosting (if used) to the top of the head.
  • Place the whipped cream on top of the head and sew it securely.
  • Sew the cherry onto the center of the whipped cream.
  • Embroider blush on the cheeks using pink thread for added charm.
