Pattern Description:
The Painted Hills Wall Hanging is an intermediate tapestry-style crochet project that transforms simple stitches into a warm, sunset-inspired landscape.
Worked entirely in single crochet with bulky yarn, it uses bold color changes and bobbin-based sections to “paint” hills, sky, and sun.
Makers follow a graph to shape the scene, finishing with optional fringe, rays, and a dowel for display.

Instructions for Making the Painted Hills Wall Hanging Pattern:
Starting Row:
- Begin your design with a ch 58.
- Sc into the 2nd ch from the hook and across using Color A (dark pink).
- Each row starts with a “ch 1, turn”. The ch 1 does not count as a st.
- All st counts should be 57 sc.
- The odd rows are considered the RS.
Color Work and Technique Notes
This design is essentially a free graph pattern, and the maker must know how to read a graph to execute the design. The technique is described as “painting with yarn”.
Color Changes:
- Color work utilizes a bobbin technique; you do not need to carry the yarn.
- The yarn remains attached to the skein during the bobbin technique.
- Change colors on the last pull through of the sc.
- Blocking is highly recommended as it greatly helps the color work definition.
Finishing and Hanging
Once all the rows are complete:
- Top Attachment: Sew your wooden dowel/stick (which should be more than 20” across) to the wall hanging. Alternatively, you can sc into the last row across if preferred.
- Rays: Feel free to add rays to the sun graphic using Color F at this time.
- Hanger: For the hanging loop, ch 80 using Color E (white) and tie the ends to the first and last sts on the final row of the wall hanging.
Optional Fringe Instructions
The wall hanging includes an optional fringe that is added to the other side of Row 1.
Fringe Preparation (Cut Lengths):
- Color A (11 pieces): 12”.
- Color B (14 pieces): 11”.
- Color C (12 pieces): 10”.
- Color D (12 pieces): 9”.
- Color E (2 pieces): 40”.
- Color F (2 pieces): 36”.
Fringe Arrangement (Center Out):
- Color A is placed in the center 11 sts.
- Add 7 sts of Color B on both sides of Color A.
- Add 6 sts of Color C on both sides of Color B.
- Add 6 sts of Color D on both sides of Color C.
Color F and Color E Hanging Tails:
This specific fringe technique involves long hanging tails for Colors E and F.
- Color F: Start in the first st to the right of your last piece of Color D fringe. Pull yarn through the st, leaving an 8” tail. Pull the yarn across, leaving slack so the yarn hangs down in front of your other fringe. Pull your yarn through the first st to the left of that side’s Color D, creating an 8” tail on the left side.
- Repeat the steps for Color F again, using the first st to the left and the first st to the right of the stitches just made.
- Color E: Follow the exact same steps used for Color F, but leave a 9” tail along the sides.
- To secure the yarn, you may loop the hanging tails through the st again.
