Stitching Instructions for Making the Red Heart North Shore Cover Up Pattern:
Back Section:
- Foundation Chain:
- Ch 86 (100, 114) loosely. This will form the base of your back piece. Adjust the number of chains if needed to match your size.
- Row 1:
- Turn your work after the foundation chain.
- Ch 3 (counts as your first dc).
- Dc in each chain across: Starting from the 4th ch from hook (which counts as your first dc), double crochet in each chain across the row.
- Turn your work after completing the row.
- Result: 84 (98, 112) dc stitches for this row.
- Row 2:
- Ch 3 (counts as dc).
- Dc in each dc across: Starting from the first dc in the row, dc in each stitch across the row.
- Turn your work.
- Result: 84 (98, 112) dc stitches, identical to Row 1.
- Row 3:
- Ch 3 (counts as dc).
- V-stitch in next dc: Skip the first dc, and make a V-stitch in the next dc. To do this, you will:
- Dc in the same stitch.
- Ch 1.
- Dc in the same stitch again.
- Skip 1 dc: After completing the V-stitch, skip the next dc and repeat the V-stitch in next dc, skip 1 dc across the row.
- When you reach the last 2 dc, make a regular dc in each.
- Turn your work.
- Result: You will have alternating V-stitches and skipped stitches, with regular dc in the last 2 stitches.
- Row 4:
- Ch 3 (counts as dc).
- Tr-V-stitch in the next ch-1 space: Skip the first dc, and make a Tr-V-stitch in the next ch-1 space. To make a Tr-V-stitch, you will:
- Yarn over 2 times (for the treble crochet).
- Insert hook into the ch-1 space.
- Yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).
- Yarn over and pull through 2 loops.
- Yarn over and pull through the last 2 loops.
- Ch 1 (this forms the space between the two treble crochets).
- Yarn over 2 times again, insert hook into the same ch-1 space, and repeat the process for the second treble crochet.
- Skip 1 dc: After completing the Tr-V-stitch, skip the next dc, and repeat the Tr-V-stitch in the next ch-1 space, skip 1 dc across the row.
- Turn your work.
- Result: You will have alternating Tr-V-stitches and skipped dc stitches.
- Repeat Rows 3 and 4:
- Continue alternating between Row 3 (V-stitch row) and Row 4 (Tr-V-stitch row) until your piece measures approximately 16 ½ (18½, 20½) inches from the foundation chain (or until your desired back length).
- The V-stitches and Tr-V-stitches will create a textured, lacy pattern that adds a beautiful effect to the cover-up.
Front Section:
- Foundation Chain:
- Ch 86 (100, 114) loosely, just like the back foundation chain.
- Row 1 & Row 2:
- Repeat Row 1 and Row 2 from the Back Section to establish the stitch pattern.
- Repeat Row 3 and Row 4:
- Just like the back, continue alternating Row 3 (V-stitch) and Row 4 (Tr-V-stitch) until your front piece is the same length as the back (approximately 16 ½ (18½, 20½) inches).
- After finishing, your front and back pieces will be of the same length.
Assembly:
- Neckline Edging:
- With a smaller crochet hook (6mm), join yarn at the neckline’s starting point.
- Ch 1 to start.
- Sc around the entire neckline: Work single crochet around the entire neckline. For smoother edges, work 2-3 sc in the corners.
- Join with a slip stitch when you reach the starting point.
- This will give a clean finish to the neckline, enhancing the look of the cover-up.
- Armhole Edging:
- For each armhole, join yarn at the desired armhole opening.
- Using sc or dc, work along the edge of the armhole. You can make this edging as wide or narrow as you prefer. For a smoother finish, you can work 2-3 sc in each corner of the armhole.
- Once you’ve completed the armhole edging, join with a slip stitch and fasten off.
Finishing:
- Seaming:
- With the back and front pieces completed, it’s time to assemble the cover-up.
- Seam the sides: Using your yarn needle and matching yarn, sew the sides of the front and back pieces together, from the underarm down to the bottom hem. Make sure the seams are even and tight, but not too tight, for comfort.
- Weave in any loose ends from the yarn using a yarn needle.
Final Tips:
- Fit Adjustment: If you find the pattern too tight or loose for your preferred fit, adjust the number of foundation chains or rows as needed. The pattern is flexible, so you can customize it according to your body measurements.
- Customization: You can add extra length or width to the cover-up for a more dramatic or relaxed look. Additionally, consider adding fringes or tassels to the hem for added flair!
