Notes:

  • The bag is made by crocheting two identical squares, joining them along three sides, and finishing with decorative and functional details.
  • You begin each square with an adjustable ring and build outward using clusters and double crochets.
  • A round of crab stitch is added to the top opening for a polished edge.
  • The i-cord shoulder strap can be attached through rings sewn into the lining or the crochet edge itself.

Stitching Instructions for Making the Summer Crochet Shoulder Bag Pattern:

Make 2 Solid Crochet Squares

  • Round 1: Start with an adjustable ring. Ch 1, work 8 sc into the ring. Tighten ring and join with ss to the first sc.
  • Round 2: Ch 1, in the first st make 1 2dc-cluster, ch 3. In the next st: 1 3dc-cluster, ch 3. Rep from to around. Join with ss.
  • Round 3: Ss in next 2 sts to position in ch-3 space. Ch 2, in same space: 1 2dc-cluster, ch 3, 1 3dc-cluster, ch 1. Skip 1 st, in next ch-3 space: 3 dc, ch 1. Skip next st, in next ch-3 space: 1 3dc-cluster, ch 3, 1 3dc-cluster, ch 1. Rep from to around. Join with ss.
  • Round 4: Ss in next 2 sts to reach the ch-3 corner space. Ch 2, in same space: 1 2dc-cluster, ch 3, 1 3dc-cluster, ch 1. Skip 1 st. In next ch-space: 2 dc. Dc in each dc across. In next ch-space: 2 dc, ch 1. Skip next st. In ch-3 corner space: 1 3dc-cluster, ch 3, 1 3dc-cluster, ch 1. Rep from to around. Join with ss.
  • Round 5 and Beyond: Repeat Round 4 until your square reaches 20 x 20 cm (approx. 11 rounds with Sport weight yarn).

Joining the Squares:

  • Place the two squares together with their wrong sides facing in.
  • Using your hook, begin in a corner 3-ch space, working through both squares.
  • Ch 1, sc in the corner to secure.
  • Continue working sc evenly along three sides of the square, always stitching through both layers.
  • Fasten off and weave in ends.
  • Leave one side open for the bag’s opening.

Finishing Touches:

  • Crab Stitch Border: Along the open top edge, work a round of crab stitch (reverse single crochet). This creates a sturdy, decorative edge. Start from the right and work left-to-right.
  • Shoulder Strap – Crochet I-Cord: Make a crochet i-cord to your desired strap length (video tutorials are widely available). Attach the strap securely to each side of the bag using small metal or plastic rings sewn into the lining or through sturdy corners.

Optional Embellishments:

  • Add tassels to the i-cord ends.
  • Attach fringe or beads along the bottom edge of the bag.
  • Line the bag with fabric for structure and durability, and add small rings inside the lining to hold the strap.

Tips:

  • Use leftover yarn from other projects to make colorful variations.
  • Thicker yarns reduce the number of rounds needed but may alter the overall aesthetic, always measure!
  • The pattern is easily adjustable for a larger or smaller bag, just make bigger or smaller squares.
