The crochet V-stitch is a classic, versatile technique that creates a beautiful, open lattice texture resembling a series of the letter “V”. This pattern offers two variations: the traditional airy V-stitch and a denser, interlocking alternative.
Using sport-weight cotton yarn, you can quickly whip up these charming, fringed coasters (mug rugs) that add a cozy, handmade touch to your coffee table or desk.

Method 1: Classic V-Stitch Tutorial
This is the traditional version where stitches stack directly on top of each other, creating a lightweight, lace-like fabric.
-
Foundation: Chain a multiple of 3, then add 1 extra chain.
-
Row 1: Work 1 dc into the 4th chain from your hook. (This initial turning chain and double crochet count as your first V-stitch, creating a dc and a ch-1 space). Sk the next 2 chains, then work (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) all into the following chain. Repeat from * to * across the row until you finish the chain.
-
Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as a dc and a ch-1 space), then work 1 dc directly into the ch-1 space of the very first V-stitch below. Work a new V-stitch (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) into the ch-1 space of each V-stitch across. When you reach the final V-stitch, place 1 dc into the turning chain space, ch 1, and work 1 final dc into the 3rd chain of that turning chain.
-
Extension: Repeat Row 2 to grow the piece to your preferred length.
Method 2: Alternative Interlocking V-Stitch Tutorial
This variation joins the legs of neighboring V-stitches together, creating a tighter, more textured zig-zag appearance.
-
Foundation: Chain a multiple of 3, then add 1 extra chain.
-
How to work the stitch:
-
Yo, insert your hook into the designated stitch, and pull up a loop. Yo and pull through the first 2 loops on your hook (2 loops remain on hook).
-
Sk the next 2 chains (or skip to the next V-stitch space if working subsequent rows). Yo, insert hook into that next stitch, and pull up a loop. Yo and pull through 2 loops (3 loops now remain on hook).
-
Yo and pull through all 3 loops to close the stitches together.
-
Ch 1, then begin the first half of your next double crochet right back into that same stitch to start the next sequence.

Row 1 (Base Row): Sc into the 2nd chain from your hook. Sc into every remaining chain across. Turn.
[21 (27) sts] -
Row 2: Ch 4, work 1 dc into the 2nd stitch from the hook (this forms your first V-stitch). Work 5 (7) standard V-stitches across the row. Dc into the second-to-last stitch, ch 1, and work 1 dc into the final stitch. Turn.
[7 (9) V-stitches total] -
Row 3: Ch 4, work 1 dc into the first ch-1 space. Work 5 (7) V-stitches across by placing them into the V-spaces of the previous row. End the row by working 1 dc into the turning chain space, ch 1, and 1 dc into the 3rd chain of that initial turning chain. Turn.

Rows 4 to 10 (11): Repeat Row 3 to build the height of your coaster.

[21 (27) sts]
Fasten off your yarn and use a tapestry needle to neatly weave in all loose yarn tails.
Adding the Boho Fringe
-
Cut 42 (54) pieces of yarn, each measuring roughly 3” (7.5 cm) long.
-
Fold a strand of yarn in half to form a loop.
-
Insert your crochet hook through a stitch on one of the short ends of the mug rug, catch the yarn loop, and pull it through slightly.
-
Pull the loose ends of the strand through the loop and tug gently to secure the knot.
-
Repeat this process for every stitch along both short ends of the mug rug. Trim the edges evenly with scissors to finish.
