Crochet Flower Granny Square

Create a charming floral-themed square that works beautifully for shawls, blankets, borders, or afghans.

Materials:

  • Gauge: 4 DC x 2 rows = 1 inch
  • Finished Size: 5.5 x 5.5 inches

Instructions for Making the Crochet Flower Granny Square Pattern:

Round 1 (Center – White):

  • CH 2, make 16 DC into a magic circle.
  • SLST to the first DC to join.
  • Fasten off and weave in ends.

Alternative: CH 3, work 16 DC into 3rd CH from hook, SLST to first DC. Fasten off.

Round 2 (Petal Base – Light Pink):

  • Join with SLST to any ST of Round 1.
  • CH 2, DC in same ST (acts as first DC2TOG).
  • CH 2, DC2TOG in next ST, CH 1, DC2TOG in next ST – repeat this 7 times total.

  • Fasten off and weave in ends.
  • You should now have:

Round 3 (Petals – Medium Pink):

  • CH 2, (CL, CH 1, CL) in CH-2 space, CH 2, SLST to first SC.
  • Fasten off and weave in ends.
  • Petals formed: 8 Each CH-2 space holds a petal made with two CLs separated by CH 1.

Round 4 (Leaf Round – Green):

  • Work into the SCs between petals only.
  • SLST into any SC, CH 2.
  • (DC, TR, CH 2, TR, DC) in same SC – this forms a corner.
  • CH 4, HDC in next SC, CH 4, (DC, TR, CH 2, TR, DC) in next SC – repeat this for a total of 4 corners and 4 sides.
  • End with CH 4, SLST to first DC.
  • Fasten off and weave in ends.

Round 5 (Square Border – White):

  • SLST to any corner CH-2 space, CH 2.
  • (2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC) in corner,
  • DC in next 2 STs, 4 DC in CH-4 space, skip next ST, 4 DC in next CH-4 space, DC in next 2 STs – repeat this pattern around.
  • SLST to first DC.
  • Fasten off and weave in ends.

Tip: To get odd-numbered stitch counts per side (e.g., for joining squares), work 1 DC into the HDC in Round 4 instead of skipping it.

Finishing:

Once complete, block the square if necessary to smooth out the edges. You can create a lovely floral blanket or shawl by making multiple squares and sewing them together.
