Wildflower Blanket

Pattern Description:

The Crochet Wildflower Blanket features the classic trinity stitch, which resembles small flowers in a row, leading to its name.

This baby blanket is finished with a few rounds of single crochet and a delicate picot border, designed to keep the focus on the main stitch.

It is made with a 3-weight yarn, and crocheters are encouraged to use a practice swatch to determine the best hook size for drape and ease of working the stitches.

Materials Needed & Measurements:

  • Yarn: Bernat Softee Cotton. Four skeins of Golden are used, but any color is suitable, though variegated yarn is not recommended as it may obscure the stitches.
  • Yarn Weight: 3 weight.
  • Hook: Size G, H, I, or J hook to achieve the correct tension. The base chain was made with a size G (4.00 mm) hook, and an I (5.5 mm) size hook was used for the trinity stitch.
  • Notions: Scissors, tapestry needle.
  • Measurements: 28 x 28 inches.

Stitches & Abbreviations Used:

SC – Single Crochet

SC3TOG – Single Crochet 3 Together

CH – Chain

YO – Yarn Over

SK – Skip

SL ST – Slip Stitch

Pattern Instructions for the Main Blanket Body

Before beginning, remember to make a practice swatch to ensure you have the appropriate hook size for drape and ease of working the stitches.

  • Starting Chain: Chain 110, or any even number if you wish to make a larger blanket.
  • Row 1:
    • Begin in the second chain from the hook and work 1 SC.
    • Insert hook into the same space as the SC just worked and pull up a loop (this is the first “leg” of the stitch).
    • Insert hook into the next chain and pull up a loop (second “leg”).
    • Insert hook into the next chain and pull up a loop (third “leg”).
    • Yarn over and pull through all loops on your hook (SC3TOG complete).
    • CH 1.
    • Now, repeat from step 2 (starting with inserting the hook into the same chain as the third leg of the previously worked stitch and pulling up a loop) across the row until there are 2 chains left.
    • Work 1 more SC3TOG, but OMIT the CH 1 after this last SC3TOG in the row.
    • Work 1 SC into the final stitch where you worked the 3rd leg of the last SC3TOG.
    • CH 1 and turn.
  • Row 2:
    • Work 1 SC into the first stitch.
    • Beginning in the same space as the SC just worked, insert hook and pull up a loop.
    • Insert hook into the next stitch and pull up a loop.
    • Insert hook into the next stitch and pull up a loop.
    • Yarn over and pull through all loops.
    • CH 1.
    • Now, repeat the SC3TOG (always beginning the first leg in the same space as the third leg of the stitch previously) followed by a CH 1 across the row.
    • Omit the final CH 1 after the last SC3TOG of the row.
    • Work 1 SC into the final stitch where you worked the 3rd leg of the last SC3TOG.
    • CH 1 and turn.
  • Row 3 until the blanket is the height needed: Repeat Row 2 for all subsequent rows until your blanket reaches the desired height.

Border Instructions

Border Instructions

Once the main body of the blanket is complete, you will add a border in five rounds:

  • First Round:
    • After completing the last row of the blanket, CH 1 and turn.
    • Work 1 SC into the first stitch.
    • Work 2 SC into the next stitch.
    • Then, repeat the following sequence across the row: SK the next stitch, then work 2 SC into the next stitch.
    • When you reach the corners, work 3 SC into each corner.
    • Along the sides of the blanket (where you are working into the ends of rows), work 2 SC every other row.
    • Do not join the rounds and do not turn after this round.
  • Second through Fourth Rounds:
    • For these rounds, simply work 1 SC into each SC from the previous round.
    • Continue to work 3 SC into each corner SC to maintain the square shape.
    • Again, do not join or turn the rounds. (A tip is provided to achieve a cross stitch look for your single crochets: “Hook Over the yarn and pull through,” with a video tutorial available for demonstration).
  • Fifth Round (Picot Border):
    • Work 1 SC into the first SC.
    • Then, repeat the following sequence around the entire blanket: CH 3, work 1 SC into the same space as the SC previously worked (this forms the picot), then work 1 SC into each of the next 4 stitches.
    • Once you have completed this sequence all the way around the blanket, join with a SL ST to the first SC of the round.
    • Finally, tie off your yarn.

Your Crochet Wildflower Blanket is now complete!
