Stitching Instructions for Making the Patons Twisting Lace Socks Pattern:
Foundation Chain:
- Begin by chaining 15 stitches (ch 15). This will form the base for the toe of your sock.
- First Round (1st rnd):
- Turn to the right side (RS). Work 1 single crochet (sc) into the 2nd chain from the hook.
- Continue working 1 sc in each chain across the foundation chain.
- Once you reach the end, work 1 sc into each chain on the opposite side of the foundation chain, creating a rounded base for the toe.
- Join the round with a slip stitch (sl st) to the first sc.
- Total sc: 28.
- Second Round (2nd rnd):
- Ch 1 (to start the round).
- 1 sc in the next sc, 2 sc in the next sc, 1 sc in each of the next 11 sc, 2 sc in the next sc.
- Repeat this sequence once more.
- Join with a sl st to the first sc.
- Total sc: 32.

- Total sc: 36.

Heel and Foot Continuation

- Repeat this sequence once more.
- Join with a sl st to the first sc.
- Total sc: 44 (Size 7/8), 48 (Size 9/10).
Shaping the Heel
- Lower Heel (Work only the bottom part of the sock):
- First row: With the right side of the bottom of the sock facing you, join with a sl st at the right marker. Ch 1, then work 1 sc in each of the next 21 (24-27) sc. Turn.
- Second row: Ch 1, work 1 sc in each sc across. Turn.
- Third row: Ch 1, 1 sc in each sc to the last 2 stitches. Draw up a loop in each of the next 2 stitches, yarn over (yoh), and draw through all loops to complete a single crochet 2 together (sc2tog). Turn.
- Repeat this process to create the heel shaping, working sc2tog as needed.
- Upper Heel:
- Continue working the upper heel section, reducing the number of sc in each row to form the top of the heel, ending with the required number of stitches for each size.
For example, size 5/6 ends with 22 stitches, size 7/8 with 26 stitches, and size 9/10 with 28 stitches.
Ankle and Cuff
- Ankle: Join yarn with a sl st in any ch-1 space. Work the dc2tog (double crochet 2 together) pattern, working 3 dc in the next stitch, followed by dc2tog and ch 1.
Skip the next stitch and repeat this pattern until you reach the desired ankle length. Join with a sl st to the beginning dc2tog. Continue this pattern until the sock measures the required length for the ankle.
- Cuff: To finish the sock, work 3 rounds to form the cuff. Start with a round of single crochet (sc), followed by a round of half double crochet (hdc), and finish with a round of front post double crochet (dcfp). The cuff should measure approximately 2 inches (5 cm).
Finishing
- Fasten off and weave in all ends using a tapestry needle.
- Make sure the socks are of even size, adjusting if necessary.
