The fabrics used are sourced from the Modern Farmhouse collection by Simple Simon and Co. for Riley Blake Designs.

Materials Needed & Measurements:

  • Black print (for blocks): 1/8 yard.
  • White print (for blocks, pillowcase band): 1/3 yard.
  • Green print (for blocks): 10″-square.
  • Pink print (for blocks, pillowcase band): 1/3 yard.
  • Green floral (for blocks, pillowcase body): 7/8 yard.

Instructions for Making the Mini Star Pillowcase Pattern:

Cutting Fabrics

  • From black print, cut:
    • 4 strips of 1 \times 20″
    • 1 strip of 1 \times 14″
  • From white print, cut:
    • 1 rectangle of 6-1/2 \times 21-1/2″
    • 1 rectangle of 1-1/2 \times 6-1/2″
    • 7 strips of 1 \times 20″
    • 1 strip of 1 \times 14″
    • 2 rectangles of 1 \times 6-1/2″
    • 6 rectangles of 1 \times 3-1/2″
    • 6 rectangles of 1 \times 2-1/2″
    • 12 rectangles of 1 \times 2″
  • From green print, cut: 16 squares of 2″
  • From pink print, cut:
    • 1 rectangle of 6-1/2 \times 41-1/2″
    • 8 squares of 2″
  • From green floral, cut:
    • 1 rectangle of 26 \times 42″
    • 3 squares of 2-1/2″

Assemble Blocks

  • Create Strip Set A: Sew together a black print 1 \times 14″ strip and a white print 1 \times 14″ strip. Cut this strip set into twelve 1″-wide A segments.
  • Create Strip Set B: Sew together a black print 1 \times 20″ strip and a white print 1 \times 20″ strip. Cut this strip set into twelve 1-1/2″-wide B segments.
  • Construct Corner Units: Sew together an A segment and a B segment. Add a white print 1 \times 2″ rectangle to the top edge to create a corner unit. The resulting unit should be 2″ square, including seam allowances. Repeat this process to make 12 corner units total.
  • Create Strip Set C: Sew together two white print 1 \times 20″ strips and one black print 1 \times 20″ strip. Repeat to make three C strip sets total. Cut these strip sets into twelve 3-1/2″-wide C segments.
  • Mark Squares: Use a pencil to mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of the green print and pink print 2″ squares. To prevent stretching the fabric while marking, place 220-grit sandpaper underneath each square.
  • Make Green Flying Geese Units: Align a marked green print square with one end of a C segment. Sew directly on the marked line.

Trim the seam allowance to 1/4″ and press the attached triangle open. Add a second marked green print square to the opposite end of the segment to complete a green Flying Geese unit.

The unit should measure 2 \times 3-1/2″ including seam allowances. Repeat this step to create eight green Flying Geese units total.

  • Make Pink Flying Geese Units: Repeat Step 6 using the pink print marked squares to create four pink Flying Geese units.
  • Construct Block Centers: Sew white print 1 \times 2-1/2″ rectangles to opposite edges of a green floral 2-1/2″ square. Then, add white print 1 \times 3-1/2″ rectangles to the remaining edges to complete the block center.

The block center should be 3-1/2″ square, including seam allowances. Repeat to make three block centers total.

  • Complete the Blocks: Lay out four corner units, four matching Flying Geese units, and one block center in three rows.

Sew the pieces together within the rows, then join the rows to form a complete block.

The finished block should be 6-1/2″ square, including seam allowances. Repeat this process to make three blocks total.

Assemble Band

  • Create Pieced Row: Using 1/4″ seam allowances, lay out the three completed blocks, the white print 1-1/2 \times 6-1/2″ rectangle, the white print 1 \times 6-1/2″ rectangles, and the white print 6-1/2 \times 21-1/2″ rectangle.

Sew these pieces together, pressing all seams toward the white print rectangles. This forms a pieced row that measures 6-1/2 \times 41-1/2″ including seam allowances.

  • Form the Band Loop: Join the pieced row to the pink print 6-1/2 \times 41-1/2″ rectangle. Next, join the short ends of this unit to create a loop, pressing the seam open.
  • Prepare Band: Fold the loop in half with the wrong side inside, and press to create the pillowcase band.

Assemble Pillowcase

  • Create Pillowcase Body: Fold the green floral 26 \times 42″ rectangle in half to form a 26 \times 21″ rectangle.

Using a 1/2″ seam allowance, sew together the long edges and one set of short edges to construct the pillowcase body. Turn the body right side out and press it flat.

  • Attach Band: Slide the pillowcase band over the pillowcase body, ensuring the pieced side of the band faces the right side of the pillowcase body.

Match the raw edges and seams and pin the band in place. Sew the band and the pillowcase body together.

  • Finish Pillowcase: Press the pillowcase band open, directing the seam allowances toward the pillowcase body.

Topstitch 1/8″ from the band edge to secure the seam allowance and complete the pillowcase.
