DIY Bunny Slippers

This project includes instructions for modifying a standard top pattern into a bunny-themed nightgown and creating a pair of coordinating quilted bunny slippers for toddlers.

Materials Needed

  • Nightgown:
    • Base pattern: Harper Top (or a similar raglan-style top).
    • Fabric: Approximately 1–1.5 yards of flannel or lightweight cotton, depending on size.
  • Slippers (Toddler sizes 7–10):
    • 1/4 yard of flannel (lining).
    • 1/4 yard of terry cloth or toweling material (outer shell).
    • Cotton batting for structure and warmth.
    • Embroidery floss for facial details.
  • General:
    • Coordinating thread.
    • Standard sewing tools (scissors, pins, needles).

Pattern Pieces / Cutting Instructions

For the nightgown, use your base pattern pieces, but extend the front and back panels by 6 inches (15 cm) to create a dress silhouette.

For the slippers, cut the following components from your templates:

  • Flannel Lining:
    • 2 Sole pieces
    • 2 Upper pieces
  • Terry Cloth (Outer):
    • 2 Sole pieces
    • 2 Upper pieces
    • 4 Earpieces
  • Cotton Batting:
    • 8 Sole pieces (providing 4 layers per slipper)
    • 4 Upper pieces (providing 2 layers per slipper)

Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions

1. Create the Ears:

Create the Ears

Place two terry cloth ear pieces with right sides together. Sew along the curved edges using a 3/8″ (1 cm) seam allowance, leaving the straight bottom edge open.

Trim the seam allowance near the tip and clip the curves to ensure a smooth shape when turned. Turn the ears right side out and press.

2. Layer the Lining and Batting

Layer the Lining and Batting

Organize your batting layers under your flannel lining pieces. For each slipper, stack four batting soles under one flannel sole and two batting uppers under one flannel upper.

Secure these stacks with pins or a basting stitch; for the remainder of the project, treat each flannel/batting stack as a single thick layer of fabric.

3. Assemble the Inner and Outer Shells

Assemble the Inner and Outer Shells
  • Lining: With right sides together, pin the flannel upper to the flannel sole. Sew around the perimeter.
  • Outer: Repeat the process by pinning the terry cloth upper to the terry cloth sole with right sides together and sewing around the edge.

4. Attach the Ears

Position the finished ears onto the right side of the outer terry cloth upper piece. Baste them in place to ensure they do not shift during the final assembly.

5. Combine Shell and Lining

Turn the terry cloth outer shell inside out. Keep the flannel lining shell right side out. Insert the lining into the outer shell so that the right sides of the fabrics are touching. Align the top opening and the heel edges and pin them securely.

6. Final Stitching and Turning

Sew around the top opening and the heel of the slipper. Important: Leave a 2.5-inch (6.4 cm) gap along one side of the sole so you can turn the slipper. After sewing, clip the seam allowances at the curves, then pull the slipper through the gap so the right sides are facing out.

7. Finishing Touches

Finishing Touches

Tuck the raw edges of the 2.5-inch opening inward. Close the gap using a hand-sewn slip stitch for a clean finish. Use embroidery floss to stitch a bunny face and whiskers onto the toe area of each slipper.

Assembly Notes or Tips

  • Seam Allowance: A consistent 3/8″ (1 cm) seam allowance should be used for all slipper components unless otherwise specified.
  • Clipping Curves: To prevent the slippers from looking bulky or misshapen, always clip into the seam allowance on curved edges before turning the fabric right side out.
  • Batting Management: Because the batting layers are thick, use a walking foot on your sewing machine if available to help the fabric feed evenly.

Optional Variations

  • Plain Slippers: For a classic look, omit the ears and embroidery steps to create simple, cozy quilted slippers.
  • Summer Version: For warmer weather, use the original Harper Top length and short sleeves to create a lightweight pajama set.
