Stitching Instructions for Making the Ammonite Crochet Hook Roll Pattern:

Foundation

  • Ch 57 (or adjust the chain length in multiples of 3 for your desired width).

Base Rows

  • Row 1:
    • Starting in the 4th ch from the hook (counts as the first dc), work 1 dc in each remaining chain across.
    • You should have 55 stitches at the end of the row.
  • Row 2:
    • Ch 3 (counts as the first dc), turn.
    • Work 1 dc in each stitch across the row.
    • Ensure your stitch count remains consistent at 55.

Ammonite Design (Textured Pattern Section)

  • Row 3 (Creating the Spiral Texture):
    • Ch 4 (counts as the first tr), skip the next 2 stitches.
    • Work 1 tr into the next stitch, ch 1, then go back and work 1 dc into the first skipped stitch (this creates the crossed effect).
    • Repeat from * to the end of the row. You’ll end with 1 tr in the last stitch.
  • Row 4 (Smoothing the Pattern):
    • Ch 1, turn.
    • Work 1 sc in each stitch and ch-1 space across the row.
  • Row 5 (Adding More Texture):
    • Ch 4 (counts as the first tr), skip 1 stitch.
    • Work 1 quadtr (yarn over 5 times) into the next stitch, then work 1 tr into the skipped stitch (crossing the stitches).
    • Repeat from * to the end of the row.
  • Row 6:
    • Ch 1, turn.
    • Work 1 sc across the row, ensuring you stitch into each post and space for consistent edge shaping.
  • Repeat Rows 3-6: Continue repeating these rows to create the ammonite texture. The crossover stitches (Rows 3 and 5) form the signature spiral design.

Beaded Edging

  • Before starting this section, thread all 24 beads onto your yarn.
  • Row 1 (Beaded Single Crochet):
    • Ch 1, work 1 sc into the first 2 stitches.
    • Slide one bead close to your hook, yarn over, and complete the next sc, enclosing the bead.
    • Work 2 plain sc, then another beaded sc.
    • Repeat this pattern (2 plain sc, 1 beaded sc) across the row.
  • Crab Stitch Border:
    • Once the beaded row is complete, work Crab Stitch (reverse single crochet) around all edges of the hook roll.
    • In each corner, work 3 sc to maintain a smooth turn.

Finishing Touches

  • Button Loop:
    • On one short edge, locate the center stitch. Attach yarn, ch 10 (or as needed to create a loop that fits snugly around your button), and join with a sl st to the same stitch.
    • Fasten off and weave in the ends.
  • Button Attachment: On the opposite short edge, sew on the button securely. Position it so the loop can easily wrap around the button to close the roll.
