Stitching Instructions for Bernat Crochet Diamond Days Bag Pattern:

Bag Body Construction:

  • Start the Foundation:
    • Begin by ch (chain) the required number of stitches for the foundation of the bag. Follow the pattern for the specific stitch count and work in sc (single crochet) for the first few rounds.

You’ll alternate between Color A and Color B as directed in the pattern to create the colorful design.

  • Rounds 1 to 24:
    • Rnd 1: Start with Color A, ch 1, and work sc in each stitch across the round. Join with a sl st (slip stitch) to the first sc to complete the round. Turn to start the next round.
    • Continue alternating between Color A and Color B as per the pattern. Each round will consist of different combinations of sc, mosaic dc, and ch-2 spaces. Ensure you skip the correct stitches as instructed to form the pattern.
    • In each round, follow the sequence of 1 sc in the next few stitches, then alternate with mosaic dc in the skipped stitch from 3 rows below (a technique that adds texture to the bag).
  • Mosaic dc (Mosaic Double Crochet):
    • For the mosaic dc, you will skip a stitch, then work a dc (double crochet) into the skipped stitch 3 rows below your current row. This creates a diamond-shaped effect across the bag.
  • Example:
    • Rnd 2: 1 sc in each of the next 4 sc. Mosaic dc in next skipped sc 3 rows below. 1 sc in next 4 sc. Repeat this sequence around.
    • Ch-2 spaces: These are created to form the gaps where the eyelets for the drawstring will later be threaded.

Make sure you ch 2, and skip the stitch immediately following to create these spaces.

  • Joining and Turning:
    • After completing each round, join the round with a sl st to the first sc. After joining, turn the work around to start the next round.

Be careful to maintain the correct side of the work, alternating between RS (Right Side) and WS (Wrong Side) as directed in the pattern.

  • Eyelet Round:
    • For the eyelet round, ch 1, then sc in each of the next 6 stitches. Create ch-2 spaces by chaining 2 and skipping 2 stitches, repeating the pattern until you have created all the necessary eyelets. Finish the round with sc in the remaining stitches.
  • Example:
    • Eyelet rnd: 1 sc in next 6 sc. (Ch 2, skip 2 sc, 1 sc in each of next 12 sc) 7 times. Ch 2, skip 2 sc, 1 sc in next 6 sc.

Drawstring:

  • Ch 120 with two strands of Color A held together. Work in the bottom loops only of the chain to create a more textured look.
  • Work sl st (slip stitch) in each chain from the second chain from the hook all the way to the end of the chain.
  • Fasten off the drawstring and carefully thread it through the eyelets of the bag. Start at the 4th eyelet and weave the drawstring in and out through all the eyelets, ensuring that the ends protrude from the 4th and 5th eyelets.

Tassels (Optional):

  • To create tassels, wrap Color A around a 4-inch piece of cardboard 40 times. Tie securely at one end, then cut across the other end to create the tassel fringe. Wrap yarn around the tied end of the tassel 6 times and tie securely.
  • Attach a tassel to each end of the drawstring for added decoration.

Straps:

  • Crocheting the Straps:
    • With two strands of Color A, ch 6 to begin the strap.
    • For the first row, sc in each chain across. Continue for the second row by ch 1, then sc in each stitch to the end of the row. Turn after each row.
    • Keep working in rows until the strap measures approximately 20″ [51 cm].
  • Edging the Straps:
    • After reaching the desired strap length, ch 1 and work 1 round of sc evenly around all edges of the strap. In each corner, work 3 sc to ensure smooth, rounded edges.
    • Join with a sl st to the first sc to complete the edging and fasten off.
  • Attaching the Straps:
    • Hold the two straps together with the WS facing out. Align the short ends of the straps with the top of the bag, positioning them over the last row of the Mosaic Diamond pattern.
    • Sew the straps onto the bag using a tapestry needle, making sure the straps are centered along the back seam.
    • Flip the straps over to the RS and sew the remaining ends to the bottom of the bag, approximately 3 inches from the center back seam.

Finishing Touches:

  • After attaching the straps, ensure that any loose ends are woven in securely and that all sections are neatly joined. The bag should now have a functional, decorative drawstring closure and sturdy straps for carrying.
