Instructions for Making the Cher Jacket and Dion Skirt Pattern:
Sewing the Cher Jacket
- Front Construction
- Join the front side panels to the center front using a ½″ seam allowance.
- Attach the yoke and fold the button placket neatly.
- Pockets, Back, and Belt
- Prepare patch pockets and flaps by finishing seam allowances, then attach them to the jacket front.
- Assemble the back by sewing side panels to the center back and connecting the back yoke.
- Create the belt by sewing two strips together (right sides facing), leaving one end closed. Insert the belt between the back seams and secure with the inseam pockets.
- Joining the Body & Sleeves
- Attach front and back pieces at the side seams, sewing carefully around the inseam pockets.
- Sew the shoulder seams together.
- Construct sleeves by joining front and back sleeve sections, leaving the slit open at the hem. Add the cuff after sewing the sleeve placket.
- Insert the sleeves into the armholes and stitch in place.
- Collar, Waistband & Finishing
- Sew the collar pieces right sides together, turn, and attach to the neckline.
- Construct the waistband and secure it to the hem of the jacket.
- Finish by sewing buttonholes and attaching jean buttons to cuffs, belt, pockets, and the placket.
Sewing the Dion Skirt
- Panels and Seams
- Sew waistband facings together at the side seams. Mark notches for pleats, fold them toward the side seam, and baste in place.
- For the back, sew skirt side-back pieces to the center back panel with a ½″ seam allowance. Press or clean-finish seams.
- Attach the skirt front to the back along the side seams, then press and clean-finish raw edges.
- Waistband Attachment
- Finish the bottom edge of the waistband facing.
- Pin the waistband facing to the skirt (right sides together) and sew with a ½″ seam allowance.
- Understitch the seam allowance toward the facing if desired for a crisp finish, then press the waistband neatly.
- Installing the Zipper
- Place the zipper at the center back, ensuring it extends slightly above the waist seam.
- Using a zipper foot, stitch it in place. Fold the top of the zipper tape so the teeth lay flat between the facing and skirt fabric.
- Clip seam allowances carefully, then topstitch close to the zipper teeth for a clean finish.
- Finishing Touches
- After the zipper is set, close the remainder of the center back seam with topstitching about ⅛″ from the edge.
- Hem the skirt with a 1″ allowance: press twice, then secure with slip stitching, machine topstitching, or fusible hemming tape.
