Stitching Instructions for Making the Crochet Amish Puzzle Ball Pattern:

Step 1: Making the Wedges (12 pieces)

  • Start: Begin with a magic ring or ch 2, and work 6 sc into the first ch. Pull tight to close the ring.
  • Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in the magic ring. (6 sts)
  • Rnd 2: Inc in each st around by working 2 sc in each st. (12 sts)
  • Rnd 3: (Sc in the next st, inc in the next st) repeat 6 times. (18 sts)
  • Rnd 4: (Sc in the next 2 sts, inc in the next st) repeat 6 times. (24 sts)
  • Rnd 5: (Sc in the next 3 sts, inc in the next st) repeat 6 times. (30 sts)
  • Rnds 6–12: Work sc in each st around. Maintain 30 sts per rnd.
  • Rnd 13: (Sc in the next 3 sts, dec) repeat 6 times. (24 sts)
  • Rnd 14: (Sc in the next 2 sts, dec) repeat 6 times. (18 sts)
  • Rnd 15: (Sc in the next st, dec) repeat 6 times. (12 sts)
  • Stuff: Use fiberfill to firmly stuff the wedge at this point, ensuring even filling.
  • Rnd 16: Dec around by working sc2tog in each st. (6 sts)
  • FO: Leave a long tail for sewing. Use a yarn needle to close the opening tightly and weave in the tail securely.

Step 2: Making the Lid Chains (3 pieces)

  • Foundation Chain: Ch 36, ensuring the chain length is long enough to wrap snugly around the wedges.
  • Rnd 1: Starting in the second ch from the hook, sc in each ch across. (35 sts)
  • Rnd 2: Turn, ch 1, and sc in each st across.
  • Repeat Rnds 1–2 until the strip is approximately 3 cm (1.2 inches) wide, or adjust for the desired snugness.
  • FO: Leave a long tail for sewing.

Step 3: Assembling the Puzzle

  • Joining the Wedges into Groups:
    • Divide the 12 wedges into 3 groups (4 wedges per group).
    • Take 4 wedges and position them side by side to form a circular segment.
    • Using the yarn tail from the wedge, sew along the edges where the wedges touch, creating a secure join. Repeat for the other two groups.
  • Adding the Lid Chains:
    • Wrap one lid chain around each group of wedges. The chain should snugly encircle the group without slipping off.
    • Overlap the ends of the chain and sew them securely using the yarn tail.
  • Final Assembly:
    • Interlock the 3 groups of wedges by sliding them together. The lid chains will hold the wedges in place while allowing them to interlock seamlessly.
    • Adjust the placement to ensure the puzzle ball is symmetrical and holds its shape.
