Stitching Instructions for Making the Portofino Bag Set Free Pattern:

Tote Bag Instructions

Base:

  • Foundation Chain: Ch 50 (adjust if you want a different width).
  • Round 1:
    • Work dc in the 4th ch from the hook (this counts as your first dc).
    • Work 1 dc in each ch across the row.
    • At the last ch, work 3 dc to turn the corner and continue working on the opposite side of the starting chain.
    • Work 1 dc in each ch along the other side. At the final ch, work 3 dc to complete the round.
    • Join with a sl st to the top of the starting dc.
  • Round 2:
    • Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch). Work 1 sc in each st, increasing at the four corners by placing 2 sc in the same st.
    • Join with a sl st to the first sc.
  • Rounds 3-6: Repeat Round 2, ensuring increases are placed consistently at the corners to maintain a rectangular shape.

Body:

  • Round 7: Switch to dc stitches. Work 1 dc in each st around. Join with a sl st to the first dc.
  • Round 8 (Mesh Pattern):
    • Ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and 1 ch).
    • Sk 1 st, dc in the next st, ch 1. Repeat from * to the end of the round.
    • Join with a sl st to the 3rd ch of the starting ch-4.
  • Rounds 9-28 (or desired length): Repeat Round 8 for a continuous mesh pattern.

Straps:

  • Attach Straps: Ch 50 for the first strap. Use a sl st to attach it to the opposite side of the bag.
  • Reinforce Straps: Work sc across the ch and along the bag edge where the strap attaches. Continue reinforcing the strap by working 1-2 rows of sc until the strap feels sturdy. Repeat for the second strap.

Bottle Bag Instructions

Base:

  • Foundation Ring: Ch 6, join with a sl st to form a ring.
  • Round 1: Ch 1, work 8 sc into the ring. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (8 sts)
  • Round 2: Ch 1, work 2 sc in each st around. Join with a sl st. (16 sts)
  • Round 3: Ch 1, 1 sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st. Repeat from * around. Join with a sl st. (24 sts)

Body:

  • Round 4:
    • Switch to dc. Ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and 1 ch).
    • Sk 1 st, dc in the next st, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join with a sl st.
  • Rounds 5-18 (or desired height): Repeat Round 4, maintaining the mesh pattern.

Strap:

  • Attach Strap: Ch 50 (or desired length). Use a sl st to attach it to the opposite side of the bag.
  • Reinforce Strap: Work sc across the ch. Add an additional row of sc if needed for extra strength.

Finishing:

  • Weave in all loose ends with a tapestry needle.
  • Block both bags for a polished look.
