Stitching Instructions for Making Crochet Dinosaur Pattern:
Head and Body:
- Round 1: Start with a magic ring. Work 6 sc into the ring. Pull the ring tightly closed to secure the stitches. (6 sts)
- Round 2: Work 2 sc in each st around (increase in each stitch). Repeat this for all 6 stitches. (12 sts)
- Round 3: (1 sc, inc) repeat around.
- Start with 1 sc in the first stitch.
- In the next stitch, inc (2 sc in the same stitch).
- Repeat this sequence (1 sc, inc) for the remaining stitches. (18 sts)
- Round 4: (2 sc, inc) repeat around.
- Work 1 sc in each of the first two stitches.
- In the third stitch, inc.
- Repeat this sequence (2 sc, inc) until the end of the round. (24 sts)
- Rounds 5–8: Work 1 sc in each st around.
- No increases or decreases here. Simply work 1 sc into every stitch to maintain the shape.
- This will create the height of the head and body. (24 sts per round)
- Round 9: (2 sc, dec) repeat around.
- Work 1 sc in each of the first two stitches.
- In the third and fourth stitches, work a dec (single crochet two stitches together).
- Repeat this sequence (2 sc, dec) until the round is complete. (18 sts)
- Round 10: (1 sc, dec) repeat around.
- Work 1 sc in the first stitch.
- In the next two stitches, work a dec.
- Repeat this sequence (1 sc, dec) until the end of the round. (12 sts)
- Round 11: Work 1 sc in each st around. (12 sts)
Stuff the head and body firmly with fibrefill as you go. Make sure the shape is rounded and full but not overstuffed to avoid distortion.
Tail:
- Round 1: Start with a magic ring. Work 6 sc into the ring. Pull tight. (6 sts)
- Round 2: (1 sc, inc) repeat around.
- Work 1 sc in the first stitch.
- In the next stitch, inc (2 sc in the same stitch).
- Repeat (1 sc, inc) for the remaining stitches. (9 sts)
- Rounds 3–6: Work 1 sc in each st around.
- Continue to work 1 sc into each stitch without increases or decreases.
- This will create the tail’s narrow shape. (9 sts per round)
- Lightly stuff the tail as you go. Do not overstuff to ensure flexibility and to maintain the natural curve of the tail.
Legs (Make 4):
- Round 1: Start with a magic ring. Work 6 sc into the ring. Pull tight to close. (6 sts)
- Round 2: Work 1 sc in each st around. (6 sts)
- Maintain the same stitch count to create a small cylindrical shape.
- Round 3: (1 sc, inc) repeat around.
- Work 1 sc in the first stitch.
- In the next stitch, inc.
- Repeat (1 sc, inc) until the round is complete. (9 sts)
- Stuff the legs lightly and fasten off, leaving a long tail of yarn for sewing. Make sure all legs are equal in size and shape.
Armor Plates (Using Bobble Stitch):
- Start: Chain 3.
- Bobble Stitch:
- In the first chain, work 5 partial dc:
- Yarn over, insert hook into the stitch, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).
- Yarn over, pull through the first two loops (2 loops remain).
- Repeat 4 more times until you have 6 loops on your hook.
- Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops to close the bobble.
- In the first chain, work 5 partial dc:
- Secure: Chain 1 to lock the bobble stitch in place.
- Fasten Off: Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Repeat this process to make 4–5 bobble plates, depending on how long you want the dinosaur’s back armor to be.
Assembly Instructions:
- Attach Legs:
- Position the 4 legs evenly at the bottom of the dinosaur’s body (2 at the front, 2 at the back).
- Use the long yarn tails to securely stitch each leg in place.
- Attach Tail:
- Sew the tail to the back of the body, making sure it is centered.
- Stitch tightly and securely so the tail doesn’t droop.
- Attach Armor Plates:
- Position the bobble-stitch plates along the back, starting just behind the head and working toward the tail.
- Use the long tails to sew each plate in place, spacing them evenly.
- Insert Eyes:
- Attach the 7 mm safety eyes between Rounds 5 and 6 of the head.
- Place the eyes evenly apart for a symmetrical look.
- Close Openings:
- Use the embroidery needle to stitch shut any remaining gaps or holes, especially at the neck where the head and body meet.
- Final Touches:
- Use embroidery thread to stitch a small mouth, nostrils, or any desired facial details.
- Adjust stuffing if needed to ensure the dinosaur holds its shape.
Finishing Notes:
- Double-check all sewn parts (legs, tail, and armor plates) for tightness to ensure durability.
- Gently shape the finished dinosaur with your hands to achieve the desired appearance.
