The Dune Bag is an easy-level crochet pattern inspired by windswept sand dunes, designed to be a soft, flexible shaped bag suitable for fall/winter wear.

    • Full length (B): 24 inches / 61 cm

Stitching Instructions for Making the Dune Bag Crochet Pattern:

Base (Oval Bottom) – Using Larger Hook (10mm)

  • Note: The base is worked in the round, turning after each round for even shaping.
  • Rnd 1 (RS): With Driftwood and larger hook, ch 13. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 10 ch, 3 sc in last ch. Rotate to work along opposite side of foundation ch. Sc in next 10 ch, 2 sc in last ch. Turn. (26 sts)
  • Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in next 10 sts, inc in next 3 sts, sc in next 10 sts, inc in last 2 sts. Turn. (32 sts)
  • Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in next 10 sts, (sc in next st, inc in next st) 3 times, sc in next 10 sts, (sc in next st, inc in next st) twice. Turn. (38 sts)
  • Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in next 10 sts, (sc in next 2 sts, inc in next st) 3 times, sc in next 10 sts, (sc in next 2 sts, inc in next st) twice. Turn. (44 sts)
  • Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Sl st to join, do not turn. (44 sts)

Body – Continue with Larger Hook

  • Now working in turned rounds to maintain fabric consistency.
  • Rnd 6–18: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Sl st to join, turn at end of each rnd. (44 sts)
  • Rnd 19 (Dec Rnd): Ch 1, sc in next 9 sts, sc2tog; rep from * to end. Sl st to join, turn. (40 sts)
  • Rnd 20–21: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Sl st to join, turn. (40 sts)
  • Rnd 22 (Dec Rnd): Ch 1, sc in next 8 sts, sc2tog; rep from * to end. Sl st to join, turn. (36 sts)
  • Rnd 23: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Sl st to join, fasten off. (36 sts)

Straps – Switch to Smaller Hook (8mm)

  • Work straps on opposite sides of the bag body, in turned rows.
  • Strap 1: Join yarn to one side seam (approx. 6 sts from side edge).
  • Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, sc in next 6 sts. Turn.
  • Rows 2–24: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing.
  • Strap 2: Repeat same steps on opposite side of the bag, aligning with Strap 1.

Finishing

  • Use tapestry needle to sew strap ends securely to the inside of the bag body.
  • Weave in all loose ends.
  • Block if desired to smooth shape.

Tips:

  • Use stitch markers to mark the beginning of rounds and where straps begin.
  • To ensure symmetry, count stitches carefully for strap placement.
