Stitching Instructions for Making Easter Nesting Eggs Pattern:

Starting the Egg Base:

  • Magic Ring:
    • Create a magic ring to start. This ring is a great way to start crochet projects that will be closed tightly without a hole in the center.
    • How to do a Magic Ring:
      • Make a loop with your yarn and hold the working yarn under the loop.
      • Insert your hook into the loop, yarn over, and pull the loop through.
      • Continue your single crochet stitches into the loop (see Round 1).
  • Round 1:
    • Work 6 single crochets (sc) into the magic ring.
    • Pull the yarn tail tightly to close the ring.
    • Stitch count: 6 stitches.

Building the Base Shape:

  • Round 2:
    • Work 2 sc into each stitch around. This is an increase round.
    • Stitch count: 12 stitches.
    • Tip: Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round to keep track of where each round starts.
  • Round 3:
    • Work 1 sc, then inc (2 sc in the same stitch). Repeat this pattern all around the round.
    • Stitch count: 18 stitches.
    • (Repeat (1 sc, inc) until you finish the round.)
  • Round 4:
    • Work 2 sc, then inc (2 sc in the same stitch). Repeat this pattern all around the round.
    • Stitch count: 24 stitches.
    • (Repeat (2 sc, inc) until you finish the round.)
  • Round 5:
    • Work 3 sc, then inc (2 sc in the same stitch). Repeat this pattern all around the round.
    • Stitch count: 30 stitches.
    • (Repeat (3 sc, inc) until you finish the round.)
  • Round 6:
    • Work 4 sc, then inc (2 sc in the same stitch). Repeat this pattern all around the round.
    • Stitch count: 36 stitches.
    • (Repeat (4 sc, inc) until you finish the round.)

Shaping the Egg Body:

  • Rounds 7–12:
    • Work 1 sc in each stitch around. This is a plain round with no increases or decreases.
    • Stitch count: Remains 36 stitches.
    • Work 6 rounds like this to form the height of the egg.
    • Tip: If you’d like a taller egg, continue working more rounds. For a shorter egg, reduce the number of rounds here.

Tapering the Egg (Decreasing Rounds):

Now, we’ll start to taper the egg into its top shape by decreasing the number of stitches in each round.

  • Round 13:
    • Work 4 sc, then dec (sc two stitches together). Repeat this pattern all around the round.
    • Stitch count: 30 stitches.
    • (Repeat (4 sc, dec) until you finish the round.)
  • Round 14:
    • Work 3 sc, then dec (sc two stitches together). Repeat this pattern all around the round.
    • Stitch count: 24 stitches.
    • (Repeat (3 sc, dec) until you finish the round.)
  • Round 15:
    • Work 2 sc, then dec (sc two stitches together). Repeat this pattern all around the round.
    • Stitch count: 18 stitches.
    • (Repeat (2 sc, dec) until you finish the round.)
  • Round 16:
    • Work 1 sc, then dec (sc two stitches together). Repeat this pattern all around the round.
    • Stitch count: 12 stitches.
    • (Repeat (1 sc, dec) until you finish the round.)
  • Round 17:
    • Work dec (sc two stitches together) in each stitch around.
    • Stitch count: 6 stitches.
    • At this point, the top of the egg should start to close in. We’ll finish it off in the next step.

Finishing the Egg:

  • Stuff the Egg:
    • Use fiberfill to stuff the egg. Make sure the egg is evenly stuffed to maintain its shape, but not overfilled.
    • Tip: Use a crochet hook or pencil to help push the fiberfill into all the corners.
  • Close the Top:
    • Using the yarn tail, weave through the last 6 remaining stitches.
    • Pull the yarn tightly to close the hole at the top.
    • Tip: Tie a knot and weave in the ends securely so they don’t come undone.
  • Secure and Weave in Ends: Cut the yarn, leaving a small tail. Use a yarn needle to weave in the remaining yarn tail, hiding it inside the egg.

Custom Sizes & Variations:

  • Smaller Egg: Stop increasing after Round 3 (18 stitches) and reduce the height to 3–4 rounds.
  • Larger Egg: Add an additional increase round (e.g., (5 sc, inc) for 42 stitches), and extend the body height by 2–3 rounds.

Optional Decorations:

  • Stripes: Change colors every few rounds to create a striped pattern.
  • Embroidered Designs: Use a contrasting yarn to stitch flowers, dots, or any design you like.
  • Hanging Loop: Add a small chain at the top to create a loop for hanging the egg as a decoration.
