Stitching Instructions for Making the Crochet Sweeper Cover Pattern:
Start with the Foundation Chain (Ch):
- Ch 52. This is the length of your sweeper cover, which can be adjusted by adding or reducing chains. (Tip: Use a slightly loose tension for your chain to make it easier to work into the stitches.)
Row 1 – First Row of Hdc:
- Hdc into the 3rd ch from the hook.
- Skip the first two ch as they do not count as a stitch.
- Insert your hook into the 3rd ch, yarn over (yo), pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), yo again, and pull through both loops.
- Continue working 1 hdc in each ch across.
- At the end of the row, you should have 50 hdc stitches.
Rows 2–12 – Building the Body:
- At the end of Row 1, Ch 2 and turn your work. (The ch-2 does not count as a stitch.)
- Hdc in the first st and each st across the row.
- Repeat this process for Rows 2–12. Each row will have 50 hdc stitches.
Finish Off the Main Body:
- When Row 12 is complete, finish off your yarn by cutting a 6″ tail. Pull the yarn through the last loop on your hook to secure it.
Folding for Pockets:
- Lay your piece flat.
- Fold each short edge inward, aligning so that 9 sts on each end overlap with the body. These folds create the pockets to hold the sweeper securely. (Tip: Use stitch markers or pins to hold the folds in place while stitching.)
Seaming the Long Edges with Sc:
- Attach your yarn at one corner of the long edge.
- Sc along the folded edge as follows:
- Work 1 sc through both layers (the folded edge) for the first 9 sts.
- Then work 1 sc through the single layer (center section) for the next 14 sts.
- Work 1 sc through both layers (the folded edge) for the last 9 sts.
- Finish off the edge by cutting the yarn and securing it.
- (You will have a total of 32 sc stitches along this edge.)
- Repeat this process for the other long edge.
Weaving in Ends:
- Use a yarn needle to weave in all loose ends securely. Make sure to hide them within the stitches for a neat finish.
Final Assembly:
- Stretch the cover over the bottom of your sweeper.
- Tuck the ends of the sweeper into the pockets created by the folded edges.
Tips for Success:
- Adjusting Size: If your sweeper is larger or smaller, you can easily adjust the number of chains and rows to match your measurements.
- Stitch Consistency: Use even tension throughout to ensure your piece lays flat and fits snugly.
- Durability: Using cotton yarn ensures the cover is durable and washable.
Slide the sweeper ends into the pockets, and your cover is ready to use!
