Stitching Instructions for Making the Happy Project Basket pattern:
Create the Base:
- Begin by making a ch (chain) that corresponds to the desired diameter of your basket. The pattern should provide an exact number, but if you need a guideline, start with approximately 15-20 ch for a small basket.
- Join the last chain to the first with a sl st to form a ring, ensuring that the chain is not twisted.
- Round 1:
- ch 1 (this does not count as a stitch).
- sc into each ch around. For the first round, you’ll typically work sc into each of the original chains. Join the round with a sl st to the first sc.
- Round 2:
- ch 1 to start the round.
- Increase by working 2 sc into each stitch around. This will make the base of the basket wider. To do this, in each stitch from the previous round, work 2 sc.
- Join with a sl st to the first sc.
Working in the Round for the Sides(Round 3 and Beyond):
- ch 1 at the start of the round.
- sc in the first stitch, then 2 sc in the next stitch (to increase).
- Continue this pattern of alternating 1 sc in the next stitch and 2 sc in the following stitch to form a gradual increase, ensuring that the base remains flat and round.
- Repeat this process for the number of rounds specified in the pattern until the base reaches the desired diameter (typically around 6-8 inches).
- Once you’ve reached the desired size, continue working in sc without further increases to build up the sides of the basket.
Sides of the Basket (Spiral Continuation):
- After reaching the base size, ch 1 to begin the first round for the sides.
- sc into each stitch around without any increases. Keep the stitches firm around the nylon cord to maintain a strong structure for the basket.
- Continue working in the round until the basket sides are as tall as you want (generally 4-5 rounds, depending on your preference).
- Make sure to crochet tightly to ensure that the sides stand up and the basket holds its shape.
Finishing the Top Edge:
- To finish, you may choose to add a decorative or reinforcing edge.
- Optional: Work a round of sc, hdc, or sl st around the top edge for a smooth, even finish. This will help give the top of the basket a clean and polished look.
Optional Handles:
- If the pattern calls for handles, you will typically create small loops by working ch stitches, attaching them to the sides of the basket with sl st. You can crochet a few rounds of sc into the chain loops to create sturdy handles.
Finishing:
- Once you have completed the top edge (and handles, if desired), finish the last round by securing your yarn with a sl st.
- Cut the yarn, leaving a tail long enough to weave in, and use a tapestry needle to weave in any loose ends.
- Repeat the process for the other side if you’re adding handles.
