  • If substituting yarn, use a hook 1 size larger than the yarn’s label suggests for the body and 2 sizes smaller for the eyes.

Instructions for Making the Hubble the Squid Pattern:

Eyes (Make 2):

  • With white yarn and 3mm hook:
  • R1: 6 SC in magic ring
  • R2: SC-incr x6 (12 SC) Add pupils: use black yarn to make slip stitches across 4 stitches of R1. Tie off without chaining. Leave thread for sewing.

Legs (Make 8):

With body yarn and 5mm hook:

  • Ch to desired length
  • R1: HDC across chain, continue on the opposite side of the chain Tie off and leave thread for tucking in. WS should face up.

Tentacles (Make 2):

Like legs but start with a longer chain. HDC across both sides. Tie off and leave thread for tucking.

Body:

  • With body yarn and 5mm hook:
  • R1: 4 SC in magic ring
  • R2+: Work in spirals, increasing gradually
  • R5: Increase sections create shape, keep symmetrical
  • R10: Begin to flatten – do not stuff this top section
  • R11-17: Increase again for rounded base
  • R18-23: Work even (28 SC)
  • R24: Decrease
  • R25: SC in slip stitches
  • R26: SC into BLO of R24
  • R27-31: Decrease to 7 SC
  • After R31, add eyes as described below.

Attaching the Eyes:

Flatten the body so the last stitch is on the left, open end facing you. Eyes sit below the ridge of R25. Place them symmetrically, 2 stitches apart, with 1 stitch outside each eye. Unpin before sewing. Sew with a whipstitch, hiding thread beneath stitches. Pull black pupil ends into body.

Attaching Legs & Tentacles:

  • Legs
  • Attach after R31.
  • Use new stitch marker for R32
  • Lay each leg (WS up) on body
  • Join by SC through both leg and body using 3 stitches per leg
  • Attach all 8 legs evenly around (24 stitches total)
  • Tentacles: Attach after R33 the same way as legs. Ensure even spacing and centering.

Pompoms:

Using pompom maker, wrap halves fully with body and white yarn. Tie securely and leave long tails. Trim into a round shape. Attach 1 pompom to the tip of each tentacle using the long yarn tails. Weave in the ends and trim.

Finishing:

  • R32: Begin decrease
  • R33: 3 SC, SC-decr (repeat)
  • To close: weave needle through FLO of remaining stitches and pull tight like a drawstring
  • Tie off, secure thread inside body, remove stitch marker.
