Pattern Description:
The Marion Slouch is described as a “sister hat” to the South Haven Slouch, sharing a similar basic structure but incorporating new detailing between the ribbing sections to achieve a distinct finished look. It features a rippled top that creates a faux-cinched appearance. This crochet pattern is considered Easyish, approaching intermediate level, and results in a slouchy hat.

Stitches & Abbreviations Used:
- MC (magic circle)
- CH (chain)
- ST/STS (stitch/stitches)
- SK (skip)
- SL ST (slip stitch)
- SC (single crochet)
- HDC (half double crochet)
- SC+HDC (a single crochet and a half double crochet in the same stitch)
- RibHDC (also known as Camel Stitch or 3rd Loop HDC)
Special Terminology:
- 3rd Loop: To create an HDC in the 3rd loop, the hook is inserted past the back loop into a third loop on the side of the stitch. This pushes both top loops to the front of the project, creating a ribbing effect. This is also known as a Camel Stitch or RibHDC in other patterns.
Instructions for Making the Marion Slouch Crochet Hat Pattern:

Crown (Rippled Top)
- Begin with MC and CH 2 (counts as first HDC).
- Work 8 HDC into the MC. Join with SL ST to top of CH 2. (8 STS)
- Round 2: CH 2, 2 HDC in each ST around. Join. (16 STS)
- Round 3: CH 2, HDC in next ST, 2 HDC in next ST; repeat around. Join. (24 STS)
- Round 4: CH 2, HDC in next 2 STS, 2 HDC in next ST; repeat around. Join. (32 STS)
- Round 5: CH 2, HDC in next 3 STS, 2 HDC in next ST; repeat around. Join. (40 STS)
- Continue increasing in this manner until the crown measures ~6-7” in diameter, ending with an even number of STS.
Band Ribbing
- Switch to G hook for tighter ribbing.
- CH 1, working in RibHDC (3rd loop) in each ST around. Join with SL ST.
- Repeat RibHDC rounds until band measures ~1.5”-2” or desired length. This creates a snug, textured fit.
Body of Hat
- CH 2. Work SC+HDC in each ST around to create subtle texture. Join with SL ST.
- Round 2: CH 2, HDC in each ST around. Join.
- Round 3: CH 2, HDC in next ST, HDC2TOG around for slight tapering. Join.
- Continue alternating textured rounds and plain HDC rounds until the hat reaches 9” or preferred slouch length.
Optional Slouch Adjustment
- For extra slouch, add 2-3 additional HDC rounds to the body.
- Maintain pattern of alternating textured and plain rounds for visual interest.
Finishing
- Fasten off and weave in all ends using a yarn needle.
- Block lightly if desired to even out stitches.
- Fold ribbing slightly if you prefer a cuffed look.
Notes
- The rippled crown produces a natural, cinched top effect.
- RibHDC rounds can be adjusted to be taller or shorter depending on wrist and hat tension.
- Always mark the beginning of your round with a stitch marker to keep count easy.
