Stitching Instructions for Making the Geometric Basket Crochet Pattern:

Base of the Basket

The base is worked in continuous rounds (no turning at the end of each round). Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round.

  • Magic Ring (or adjustable loop):
    • Ch 2 (this counts as the first hdc).
    • Work 8 hdc into the magic ring.
    • Pull the ring tight to close.
    • You now have 8 stitches.
  • Round 1:
    • Work 2 hdc in each stitch around.
    • You will now have 16 stitches.
  • Round 2:
    • 1 hdc, inc (meaning 2 hdc in the same stitch) repeat around.
    • You will now have 24 stitches.
  • Round 3:
    • 2 hdc, inc repeat around.
    • You will now have 32 stitches.
  • Round 4:
    • 3 hdc, inc repeat around.
    • You will now have 40 stitches.
  • Round 5:
    • 4 hdc, inc repeat around.
    • You will now have 48 stitches.
  • Continue increasing in this same pattern (adding one extra hdc between increases) until your base reaches the desired diameter (approximately 8 inches).

Sides of the Basket

  • Round 1 (Back Loop Only):
    • From here, you will start working the sides.
    • sc in back loop only (blo) of each stitch around.
    • Working in blo gives the basket a nice textured edge and separates the base from the sides.
  • Round 2 and onward (Side Walls):
    • Continue working sc in each stitch around for 8-10 rounds (depending on how tall you want the sides of your basket).
    • Work in continuous rounds, so do not turn at the end of each round.
    • Keep the tension consistent for an even height.

Geometric Pattern Section (Creating Texture):

  • After you have completed the base and sides, you will start the geometric pattern for the sides of the basket.

For the texture, work in alternating front loop only (flo) and back loop only (blo) as follows:

In the next round:

  • 1 hdc in flo, 1 sc in blo, repeat across the round.
  • Alternate between flo hdc and blo sc until the round is complete.
  • This creates a ridged, geometric pattern.
  • Repeat this pattern for 4-5 rounds depending on the look and texture you desire.
  • Optional Variations for Geometric Patterns: You can also try working dc in front loop and hdc in back loop for a different texture effect.

Final Rounds to Close the Basket:

  • After the geometric pattern is done, you can work 2-3 rounds of sc in each stitch around to finish the sides.
  • This smooths out the pattern and gives a finished look to the top edge of the basket.

Finishing the Basket

  • Slip Stitch (Sl St): When you reach the end of the final round, use a sl st to join the round and fasten off the yarn.
  • Weaving in Ends: Use a tapestry needle to weave in any loose ends of yarn securely.
  • Optional Stiffening: For added structure, you can insert plastic canvas or a basket stiffener between the two layers of the basket. This helps the basket hold its shape. Cut the plastic canvas to fit the base and side of your basket, then attach it with fabric glue or by stitching it in place.
