Stitching Instructions for Making Mug Rug Pattern:

Foundation Row

  • With Color A, make a slip knot and attach it to your hook.
  • CH 22 (this forms the base of your mug rug).
  • Starting in the 2nd CH from the hook, work 1 SC into each CH across. You will have 21 STS at the end of this row.
  • Fasten off Color A by cutting the yarn, leaving a small tail, and pulling it through the loop on your hook.
  • (Optional) Use the tail to weave into the work using your fingers to secure it.

Row 1

  • Attach Color B to the first ST of the Foundation Row by pulling a loop through the stitch and securing it with a slip knot.
  • CH 1 (this counts as the turning chain and does not count as a stitch).
  • Work 1 SC into the same ST where you joined Color B.
  • SC into each remaining ST across the row (21 STS total).
  • Turn your work.

Rows 2–3

  • CH 1, then SC into the first ST of the row.
  • Work 1 SC in each ST across (21 STS).
  • Turn your work at the end of each row.
  • After completing Row 3, fasten off Color B in the same way as Color A.

Row 4

  • Attach Color C to the first ST of Row 3 by pulling a loop through the stitch and securing it.
  • CH 1, then work 1 SC into the same ST.
  • SC into each remaining ST across the row (21 STS).
  • Turn your work.

Rows 5–6

  • Repeat the same steps as Row 4 with Color C.
  • CH 1, work 1 SC into each ST across, and turn your work.
  • After completing Row 6, fasten off Color C.

Rows 7–9

  • Attach Color D to the first ST of the previous row.
  • CH 1, then work 1 SC into the same ST.
  • SC into each remaining ST across the row (21 STS).
  • Turn your work at the end of each row.
  • After completing Row 9, fasten off Color D.

Rows 10–12

  • Attach Color E to the first ST of the previous row.
  • CH 1, then work 1 SC into the same ST.
  • SC into each remaining ST across the row (21 STS).
  • Turn your work at the end of each row.
  • After completing Row 12, fasten off Color E.

Adding Fringe

  • Cut 4″ pieces of yarn from each of the 5 colors. You will need approximately 2 strands per ST on both short sides of the mug rug (10 strands per side).
  • Fold a strand in half to form a loop.
  • Insert your hook into one of the STs at the edge of the mug rug.
  • Pull the folded loop through the ST, forming a small loop.
  • Grab the loose ends of the yarn strand, pull them through the loop, and tighten to secure.
  • Repeat this process across both short edges of the mug rug. Alternate colors for a decorative effect.
  • Trim the fringe evenly with scissors for a polished look. Use scotch tape if necessary to secure loose yarn while cutting.

Finishing Touches

  • Weave in any remaining yarn tails using your fingers.
  • Block the mug rug if desired to ensure a neat and even appearance.

Your mug rug is complete! It’s ready to protect your surfaces and add a touch of handmade charm to your home.
