Pattern Description:
Skill Level: Intermediate – familiarity with puff stitches, color changes, and working in the round is helpful.
The Rainbow Puff Square is a cheerful and colorful crochet motif adapted from the original Rainbow Puff Hexagon design by Crafty CC.
This square version keeps the beloved puff stitch texture while transforming it into a more versatile shape, ideal for joining into blankets, pillows, or other patchwork projects.
Materials:
- Yarn: Use DK or 8-ply yarn in 7 vivid colors.
Option 1 – 4 Seasons Flinders Cotton 8 Ply (Spotlight)- Colour A: Snow
- Colour B: Deep Purple
- Colour C: Aqua
- Colour D: Lime
- Colour E: Canary
- Colour F: Tangerine
- Colour G: Dark Red
- Option 2 – Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK
- Colour A: Paper White
- Colour B: Tea Rose
- Colour C: Washed Teal
- Colour D: Lime Green
- Colour E: Buttercup Yellow
- Colour F: Mandarin Orange
- Colour G: Bubblegum Pink
- Hook: A 3mm hook is ideal to prevent the second yarn from peeking through, though it can make the square stiff. To create a softer square or to reduce curling, consider using a 3.5mm or 4mm hook.
- Notions: Tapestry needle and scissors.
Abbreviations:
- Ch: Chain
- SC: Single Crochet
- DC: Double Crochet
- Sl st: Slip Stitch
- YO: Yarn Over
Special Stitch – Puff Stitch (4DC Puff): YO, insert hook into the ch-2 space, pull up a loop. Repeat this 4 times (you’ll have 9 loops on the hook). YO, pull through the first 8 loops. YO again and pull through the final 2 loops.
Pattern Notes:
- Colour A is used as the base throughout all 8 rounds. Other colors are worked only in puff stitches.
- The square begins with a magic circle.
- Each puff stitch round incorporates one rainbow color, which is cut after that round.
- Carrying yarn can lead to visible threads. For cleaner results, cut and rejoin colors, even though this creates extra ends.
- If the square starts to curl, increase your hook size.
- Maintain even tension to avoid yarn from showing through the stitches.
