Stitching Instructions for Making the Scrap Yarn Crochet Basket Pattern:

Step 1: Crochet the Base

The base of the basket is created with a simple circle pattern, starting from the center and working in the round.

  • R1: Begin by making a Magic Loop (this creates a small loop to start crocheting in). sc 6 into the magic loop (6 stitches total).
  • R2: In the next round, make 2 sc in each st (double the number of stitches from the previous row). This will give you 12 stitches by the end of the round.
  • R3: sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st. Repeat around. You should now have 18 stitches. The pattern begins to expand evenly.
  • R4: sc in the next 2 sts, 2 sc in the next st. Repeat around. After completing this round, you should have 24 stitches.
  • Continue increasing: Keep following the same rule for the next rounds, adding one extra regular stitch between the increases each time:
    • In R5, make sc in the next 3 sts, 2 sc in the next st.
    • In R6, make sc in the next 4 sts, 2 sc in the next st.
  • This gradual increase pattern will allow the base to grow into a flat circle.
  • Check for flatness: Regularly check that your circle is laying flat. If the circle starts to ruffle or curve upwards, it means you’re adding too many increases, and you may need to remove a few rounds.

A good rule is to pull back a couple of rounds and skip the increases for a round to help flatten the circle.

  • Continue until desired size: Keep working in this manner until the diameter of your circle reaches 35cm (13.5 inches) or the size you prefer. This should be approximately 17 rounds.

Step 2: Crochet the Sides (Walls)

Once your base has reached the desired diameter, you can start building the sides of the basket. In this step, there are no increases only single crochets in each stitch around.

  • Begin the sides: After completing the base, sc in each st around, working in a spiral (do not join or turn the work at the end of each round). This is where the sides begin to curl up.
  • Continue until desired height: Work in a spiral until the height of the basket reaches 25cm (10 inches), or about 25 rows. This creates the walls of your basket.

Step 3: Add the Handles

Handles are worked into the top of the basket, and the position for each handle needs to be carefully marked to ensure symmetry.

  • Find center points: Lay the basket flat, aligning the top edges. Using your measuring tape, mark the center stitch on both the front and back of the basket, approximately 5 stitches from each side.
  • Place markers: Use your stitch markers to secure the position of the handles. You should now have markers placed at the centers of the front and back.
  • Crochet the handle:
    • Starting from the marked stitch, sc up to the stitch with the first marker.
    • Chain 9 stitches, then sc into the stitch with the second marker.
    • Continue working around the top of the basket with single crochet stitches.
  • Repeat for other side: Repeat the same process on the opposite side of the basket to create a handle on the other side.
  • Sc over the chain: On the next round, when you reach the chain, sc 9 stitches over the chain to cover the gap and create a sturdy handle.
  • Continue and finish the handles: Crochet for 2 more rounds over the handle area to strengthen the handles and make them secure.

Step 4: Finishing

  • Slip stitch to join: When you’ve reached the end of the round, slip stitch the last few stitches to close the basket.
  • Fasten off: Break off the yarn and use a yarn needle to weave in any loose ends.

Enjoy your new project!
