Stained Glass Skirt Pattern

Pattern Description:

This skirt pattern involves crocheting individual, multi-colored motifs and joining them as you go to form a tube. The motifs use color changes, with the last round worked in the main color (MC).

The waistband and lower edging are then worked in the round, utilizing the Moss Stitch pattern.

Key skills include working in the round, decreasing (sc2tog), and joining motifs with slip stitches.

Instructions for Making the Stained Glass Skirt Pattern:

Motif Construction

Use the larger hook for the Motif. Begin with a Magic Ring.

  • Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 11 dc in ring, join with sl st to beg dc with new color – 12 dc.
  • Rnd 2: Sl st bet next 2 dc, ch 3, dc in same sp, (2 dc bet next 2 dc) around, join with sl st to beg dc with new color – 24 dc.
  • Rnd 3: Ch 5 (counts as dc + ch 3), 2 dc in same sp, (sk next 2 dc, 2 dc bet next 2 dc) 2 times, sk next 2 dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) bet next 2 dc; rep from 2 more times, (sk next 2 dc, 2 dc bet next 2 dc) 2 times, dc in same sp as beg dc, join with sl st to beg dc with new color.
  • Rnd 4 (Unjoined): Sl st in ch-2 sp, ch 2 (counts as hdc), hdc in same sp, (ch 2, sk next 2 sts, hdc bet next 2 sts) 3 times, ch 2, (2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc) in corner sp; rep from 2 more times, (ch 2, sk next 2 sts, hdc bet next 2 sts) 3 times, ch 2, 2 hdc in same sp as beg hdc, ch 1, join with sl st to beg hdc.
  • Fasten off.

Skirt Assembly (Joining Motifs)

  • You will make a total of 30 (33, 36, 52, 56) (60, 64, 85, 90, 95) Motifs, changing colors as indicated for Rnds 1-3, with Rnd 4 always worked in MC. The motifs are joined entirely into a tube. After the first Motif is made, subsequent Motifs are joined as you go on Rnd 4.
  • Joining Rnd 4: Begin as Rnd 4 (Unjoined). When reaching a joining point, replace the chain stitch(es) with a sl st into the corresponding sp of the previous Motif. For example, the corner sequence includes: (2 hdc in corner sp, ch 1, sl st in corresponding corner sp from previous Motif, 2 hdc in same corner sp). The ch-2 sps are replaced by: (ch 1, sl st in corresponding ch-2 sp from previous Motif, ch 1, sk 2 sts, hdc bet next 2 sts). Finish Rnd 4 as described in the Stitch Guide if no further joins are needed, otherwise, cont joining.

Moss Stitch Patt (Even Number of Sts)

This established patt is used for the edgings.

  • Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in first st, ch 1, sk next st, (sc in next st, ch 1, sk next st) around, join with sl st to beg sc.
  • Rnd 2: Ch 2 (counts as sc + ch 1), (sc in next sp, ch 1; rep from around, sc in last sp, join with sl st to beg ch-2.
  • Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same sp, ch 1, (sc in next sp, ch 1; rep from around, join with sl st to beg sc.
  • Rep Rnds 2-3 for patt.

Lower Edging

  • Using the smaller hook and MC, join yarn to any join bet Motifs along one open edge of the tube.
  • Set-up Rnd: Ch 1, sc in same join, sc in corner sp, work 1 sc in each sc and 2 sc in each ch-2 sp to next corner (approx. 13 sc per Motif), 1 sc in corner, sc in join; rep from around, skipping last sc in join, join with sl st to beg sc – total 130 (144, 156, 170, 182) (196, 208, 222, 234, 248) sc.
  • With the larger hook, work Rnds 1–3 of Moss St patt, then rep Rnds 2–3 until Edging meas 1¼”.
  • Fasten off.

Waistband

Using the smaller hook and MC, join yarn bet Motifs along the other open edge of the tube.

  • Work the Set-up Rnd exactly as for the Lower Edging.
  • With the larger hook, work Rnds 1–3 of Moss St patt.

Decrease Rnds (Dec rnds 1-6):

  • Dec rnd 1: Ch 1, sc2tog, work in est’d Moss St patt over 49 (56, 62, 69, 75) (82, 88, 95, 101, 108) sts and sps, sc2tog; rep from 1 more time – 4 sts dec’d.
  • Next rnd: Work even in est’d Moss St patt.
  • Repeat the Decrease Rnd (decreasing the number of middle sts by 1 each time) and Next rnd (working even) through Dec rnd 6.
  • After Dec rnd 6, 106 (120, 132, 146, 158) (172, 184, 198, 210, 224) sts and sps rem.

Work even in Moss St patt, if necessary, until the Waistband meas 3”. Fasten off.

Finishing

  • Weave in ends and Block pieces to finished measurements.
  • For the optional Drawstring: With the smaller hook and MC, make a ch approximately 52 (55½, 59, 62½, 66) (69½, 72¾, 76¼, 79¾, 83¼)”. Sc in second ch from hook and each ch across. Fasten off. Weave this cord in and out of the Waistband at the third row from the top.
