
Pattern Description:
The Silver Darlings is a free crochet scarf pattern utilizing the herringbone single crochet (Hsc) stitch, which is textured and squishy.
The scarf is worked in rows with increases on one side, leaving the edges unfinished. All rows after the first are worked into the back loop only. The pattern’s name is inspired by the common name for herring.
Materials Needed & Measurements:
- Yarn: Lion Brand Scarfie
- Yarn Weight: #5 Bulky yarn (78% Acrylic/22% Wool), approximately 615 yds. Any yarn of similar weight can be used.
- Hook: 7mm Hook (or the hook used to obtain gauge).
- Notions: Stitch Markers, Yarn Needle, Scissors, Measuring Tape.

- Finished Length: 45 ½ “
Stitches & Abbreviations Used:
- RS = Right Side
- WS = Wrong Side
- Sk = Skip
- St = Stitch
- Ss = Slip Stitch
- Ch = Chain
- Sc = Single Crochet
- Hsc = Herringbone Single Crochet. To perform an Hsc, you insert your hook through the left leg of the previous stitch (from right to left), then insert your hook as normal in the next stitch, yarn over (yo), draw up a loop, then yo and draw through all 3 loops on your hook.
- Blo = Back Loop Only
Instructions for Making the Silver Darlings Pattern:
Work the following rows using a 7mm hook (or the hook used to obtain gauge).
- Row 1 (RS): Ch2. Then, work (Sc, hsc) into the 2nd chain from your hook. Turn your work. You will have a total of 2 stitches.
- Row 2 (WS): Ch1. Working in Blo: make a Sc in the 1st stitch. Then, work 2 hsc in the last stitch. Turn. You will have 3 stitches.
- Row 3: Ch1. Working in Blo: work (Sc, hsc) in the 1st stitch. Then, work Hsc in the next 2 stitches. Turn. You will have 4 stitches.
- Row 4: Ch1. Working in Blo: make a Sc in the 1st stitch. Then, work Hsc in the next 2 stitches. Finally, work 2 hsc in the last stitch. Turn. You will have 5 stitches.
- Row 5: Ch1. Working in Blo: work 2 ss in the 1st stitch. Then, work Ss in each stitch across. Turn. You will have 6 stitches.
- Row 6: Ch1. Working in Blo: work Ss in the 1st stitch and each stitch until 1 stitch is left. Then, work 2 ss in the last stitch. Turn. You will have 7 stitches.
- Row 7: Ch1. Working in Blo: work (Sc, hsc) in the 1st stitch. Then, work Hsc in each stitch across. Turn. You will have 8 stitches.
- Row 8: Ch1. Working in Blo: make a Sc in the 1st stitch. Then, work Hsc in the next stitch and each stitch until 1 stitch is left. Finally, work 2 hsc in the last stitch. Turn. You will have 9 stitches.
- Row 9: Ch1. Working in Blo: work (Sc, hsc) in the 1st stitch. Then, work Hsc in the next stitch and each stitch across. Turn. You will have 10 stitches.
- Row 10: Ch1. Working in Blo: make a Sc in the 1st stitch. Then, work Hsc in the next stitch and each stitch until 1 stitch is left. Finally, work 2 hsc in the last stitch. Turn. You will have 11 stitches.
Continuing the Pattern
After completing the initial rows, you will repeat a sequence of rows:
- Repeat rows 5-10 until you have a total of 112 rows. Make sure to end with a repeat of row 10.
Keyhole Row
After reaching 112 rows, proceed to the Keyhole Row:
- Keyhole Row: Ch1. Working in Blo: work 2 ss in the 1st stitch. Then, Ss in the next 7 stitches. Ch6, sk 6 sts. Repeat from to 7 more times. Finish by working Ss in each remaining stitch across. Turn. You will have 114 stitches.
Finishing the Scarf
To complete your scarf after the Keyhole Row:
- Repeat rows 6-10.
- Then, repeat rows 5-10 again.
- Finally, repeat rows 5 & 6. On this very last row (the second repeat of row 6), work only 1 ss into the last stitch. Then, Bind off.
Once you have completed all the rows and bound off, weave in your ends.
