Stitching Instructions for Making the Single Crochet Edging Pattern:

Start at the Top Row:

  • Attach yarn with a sl knot in any st along the top row (preferably at a corner for a seamless join).
  • Ch 1 – This counts as the first sc.
  • Sc in each st across the top row. Insert the hook under both loops of each st for a neat finish.
  • Continue until you reach the last st on the top row.

Corner Stitch:

  • In the last st of the top row, make 3 sc.
    • This forms a rounded corner and smoothly transitions to the next side.
    • The first sc of the 3 acts as the last sc of the row, the second is the turning stitch, and the third is the first sc of the new side.
    • This prevents the border from pulling or curling at the corner.

Crochet Along the Side:

  • You are now working along the side with rows ending in dc.
  • The rule of thumb is to make 2 sc per dc row to maintain an even edge.
  • For each dc row:
    • Make 1 sc around the post of the dc. Insert the hook under the post, yarn over, pull through, yarn over again, and pull through both loops.
    • Make 1 sc at the base of the same dc. Insert the hook into the space between the end of the dc and the next row, yarn over, pull through, yarn over again, and pull through both loops.
  • This technique anchors the stitches securely and avoids gaps along the side.
  • Repeat (1 sc around the post, 1 sc in the base) for each dc row until you reach the bottom corner.

Bottom Edge:

  • In the first st of the bottom row (usually the starting ch of the blanket), make 3 sc.
    • This forms the corner and allows the yarn to turn smoothly.
    • Ensure the stitches are snug but not too tight to avoid curling.
  • Sc in each st across the bottom row. Insert the hook under both loops of each st for consistency.
  • When you reach the last st on the bottom row, make 3 sc in that st to form the next corner.

Other Side:

  • Repeat Step 3 along the second side of the blanket.
  • For each dc row:
    • 1 sc around the post of the dc.
    • 1 sc at the base of the same dc.
  • Continue this pattern until you reach the top corner.

Finishing the Round:

  • Sc in each st along the top row until you reach the starting ch 1.
  • Sl st into the ch 1 to close the round.
    • Insert the hook into the ch 1, yarn over, and pull through both loops on the hook.
    • This joins the round seamlessly without adding bulk.

Optional Additional Rounds:

  • For a thicker border, repeat Steps 1-6.
  • In each additional round:
    • Sc in each st across the rows and sides.
    • 3 sc in each corner st to maintain the shape and prevent curling.
  • Repeat until you reach the desired border width.
