Star Stitch Pouches

Pattern Description:

Create two stylish and functional pouches using the beautiful Star Stitch, also known as the Marguerite Stitch. 

One pouch features a flat, rectangular design, while the other stands upright with a flat base, perfect as a makeup or travel pouch. 

Both patterns include optional instructions for adding a fabric lining and zipper for a polished finish.

Skill Level

Intermediate – Knowledge of star stitch and working in rounds is recommended.

Materials:

  • Yarn: Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton (in “Goldenrod” and “Jade” used in examples)
    • Pouch #1 (Flat): Approx. 46g
    • Pouch #2 (Round Base): Approx. 57g
  • Hook: 4 mm (G-6), Clover Amour recommended
  • Notions:
    • Fabric for lining
    • Zipper (to fit pouch length)
    • Sewing needle, thread, scissors
    • Glue gun (for zipper stop)
    • Optional: Ultra leather or foldover tags

Finished Measurements:

  • Pouch #1 (Flat): 6.7″ x 4.5″ (17 cm x 11.5 cm)
  • Pouch #2 (Round Base): 7″ x 4.5″ (18 cm x 11.5 cm)

Stitches & Abbreviations:

  • ch – Chain
  • sc – Single Crochet
  • sl st – Slip Stitch
  • rep – Repeat
  • Star Stitch (Marguerite Stitch)

Star Stitch Basics:

To Make One Star Stitch:

  • Begin: Ch 3.
  • Pull loops: Insert hook into 2nd ch, pull up a loop (2 loops). Repeat in next ch (3 loops), base stitch (4), next 2 stitches (6 loops).
  • Close: Yarn over, pull through all 6 loops. Ch 1 to create the “eye.”
  • Next Star: Insert into eye, side of last spike, base of last spike, next 2 stitches (6 loops). Pull through, ch 1 to close.

Pouch #1: Flat Star Stitch Pouch

Foundation:

  • Ch 36.
  • Round 1: Sc in back loop of each ch (35), rotate work, Sc in front loops (35). Sl st to join. (70 sc total)

Round 2 (Start Star Stitches):

  • Ch 3 and begin first star stitch as described above.
  • Continue making star stitches around. The last stitch will include the sl st from Round 1.
  • Sl st into the ch-1 gap to join.

Rounds 3-11:

  • Repeat star stitch rounds as above. Always start in the “eye” of the last stitch.

Round 12 (Edging):

  • Work one round of sl st in each stitch. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Add Fabric Lining & Zipper (Optional):

  • Cut a rectangle of fabric, folded in half to match pouch size, plus 1 cm seam allowance.
  • Fold and hem top and bottom edges.
  • Pin zipper to wrong side of fabric and hand-sew each side.
  • Stitch sides of lining together. If zipper is too long, add glue and a zipper stop.
  • Insert lining into pouch. Pin and sew zipper to top of pouch just below slip stitch edging.

Pouch #2: Upright Star Stitch Pouch with Flat Base

Base:

  • Row 1: Foundation sc 25.
  • Rows 2-8: Ch 1, turn, sc across (25 sc). Repeat for 8 rows total.

Round 1 (Transition to Working in the Round):

  • Start at corner of base.
  • Sc 8 along short edge, 3 sc in corner.
  • Sc 23 on long edge, 3 sc in corner.
  • Repeat until all sides are worked. Sl st to join. (74 sc)

Rounds 2-5:

  • Ch 1, sc in each stitch around. Sl st to join. Repeat for 4 rounds.

Round 6-14 (Star Stitch Rounds):

  • Begin star stitch round using same method as Pouch #1.
  • Work in continuous rounds, ending each with sl st in ch-1 gap.

Round 15 (Edging):

  • Sl st in each stitch around. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Add Fabric Lining & Zipper (For Flat-Base Pouch):

  • Cut a rectangle and an oval from fabric, adding 1 cm seam allowance.
  • Hem top edge of rectangle. Do not hem bottom.
  • Wrap rectangle around oval base, pin and sew.
  • Stitch up the side seams.
  • Add zipper using the same method as Pouch #1.
  • Insert and pin lining into pouch. Sew zipper to the top edge, leaving sl st edging visible.

Tips:

  • Don’t crochet too tightly when forming star stitches.
  • The “eye” of the star is your anchor for the next stitch-don’t skip it!
  • Use stitch markers to mark the start of rounds if needed.
  • Add a personal touch with tags or embroidery.
