Stitching Instructions for Making the Delighted Sweater-Dress Pattern:

Step 1: Foundation Chain

  • Ch 84 (96, 108, 120, 132) based on your size.
  • Ensure your chain is even and not twisted.
  • Join the last chain to the first chain with a sl st to form a circle.
  • This foundation chain determines the neckline of your sweater-dress.

Step 2: Yoke

  • Rnd 1 (Setup Row):
    • Ch 2 (counts as the first dc), dc in the same st.
    • Skip 1 stitch, chain 1, and double crochet into the next stitch.
    • Repeat the sequence from * to the end of the round.
    • Join with a sl st to the top of the ch-2 to close the round.
  • Rnd 2:
    • Ch 2 (counts as the first dc), 1 dc in the same st.
    • Ch 1, dc in the next ch-1 sp.
    • Continue repeating the pattern from * until you reach the end of the round.
    • To join, insert hook into the top of the ch-2 and sl st.

Increase Rounds (Rnds 3-12):

  • To shape the yoke, you will add stitches to increase its size.
  • Rnd 3:
    • Ch 2, dc in the same st.
    • Ch 1, dc in the next ch-1 sp.
    • After every 4 ch-1 sps, add an increase: (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) in the same ch-1 sp.
    • Repeat to the end of the round. Join with a sl st.
  • Rnds 4-12:
    • Continue working as established, adding increases in the same way every 4th ch-1 sp.
    • Ensure the yoke becomes wider while maintaining the dc and ch-1 pattern.
  • Note: Use stitch markers to divide the yoke into four sections for front, back, and sleeves. This will help with underarm placement later.

Step 3: Body

  • Join Underarm:
    • Organize the yoke into four sections, assigning portions for the front, back, and sleeves.
    • Use stitch markers to mark where the sleeves will start and end.
  • Ch 4: At the underarm section, ch 4 to bridge the gap between the front and back panels. Repeat on the other side.

Continue Rnds for Body:

  • Begin by rejoining the yarn in the stitch immediately after the underarm using a sl st.
  • Rnd 1: Begin with ch 2, make a dc in the same st. Work ch 1, followed by a dc in the next ch-1 sp. Repeat to the end of the round.
    • When you reach the underarm chain, treat each chain as a ch-1 sp and continue the pattern.
    • Complete the round by making a sl st in the top of the ch-2.
  • Repeat this pattern in rounds, working until the body reaches your desired length.
    • Tip: For a dress-length sweater, work approximately 50-60 cm (20-24 inches) from the underarm, depending on your height and preference.

Optional Shaping:

  • If a tapered look is desired, decrease 1 st in every 5th or 6th round by skipping a ch-1 sp.

Step 4: Sleeves

  • Attach Yarn: Rejoin yarn to one armhole, preferably at the underarm join for a seamless finish.
  • Sleeve Rnds:
    • Rnd 1: Ch 2, place a dc in the same st. Work ch 1, and make a dc in the upcoming ch-1 sp. Repeat to the end of the round.
      • Connect with a sl st at the top of the starting ch-2.
    • Repeat the pattern in a continuous spiral until the sleeve measures the desired length.
  • Optional Tapered Sleeves: For a fitted sleeve, decrease 1 st in every 6th round by skipping a ch-1 sp.

Repeat for the Second Sleeve.

  • Step 5: Finishing Touches
    • Edging: Add a decorative edge to the neckline, hem, and cuffs:
  • Work 2 rounds of sc around each opening.
  • Weave in Ends: Use a yarn needle to neatly weave in all loose yarn ends.
  • Blocking: Wet block your finished sweater-dress to even out stitches and improve the drape.
