Stitching Instructions for Making the Starflower Lace Pattern:
Start with a Magic Ring
- This magic ring will provide a solid center for the lace pattern.
Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as the first dc), then make 11 more dc into the ring, totaling 12 dc in the round. Slip stitch into the top of the starting chain 3 to join. (12 dc) - Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as the first dc), 2 dc in the next dc. Repeat from to around the ring. You will increase each stitch by adding 2 dc into the same stitch. Connect with a slip stitch to the first chain 3. (24 dc)
- Round 3: Ch 3 (counts as the first dc), dc in the next stitch, 2 dc in the next stitch. Repeat from to around. This round increases the stitch count by adding one regular dc and one increase (2 dc in the same stitch). Use a slip stitch to connect to the top of the beginning chain. (36 dc)
- Round 4: Ch 3 (counts as the first dc), dc in the next 2 stitches, 2 dc in the next stitch. Repeat from to around. This round continues the increase pattern by adding one regular dc and one increase every third stitch. Secure the round by slip stitching into the top of the chain 3. (48 dc)
- Round 5: Ch 3 (counts as the first dc), dc in the next 3 stitches, 2 dc in the next stitch. Repeat from to around. The increase continues with one regular dc and one increase every fourth stitch. Slip stitch to the first chain’s top to close the round.
- Round 6: Ch 3 (counts as the first dc), dc in the next 4 stitches, 2 dc in the next stitch. Repeat from to around. The increase continues with one regular dc and one increase every fifth stitch. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3. (72 dc)
- Round 7 (Starflower Lace Round):
- Ch 3 (counts as the first dc), then ch 4 (forming a space), sk the next 4 dc, and in the next dc, make 5 dc (this creates a “star” flower shape).
- Repeat from to around. Each “star” consists of 5 dc worked into a single stitch, with a 4-ch space between each star.
- Complete the round with a slip stitch into the top of the starting chain 3. (12 starflowers, 12 ch-4 spaces)
- Round 8:
- Sl st into the ch-4 space of the first starflower, ch 3 (counts as the first dc), then dc in the next dc, ch 4 (creating a space), sk the next 5 dc, and make 5 dc in the next ch-4 space.
- Repeat from to around. This round links the starflowers by creating spaces and adding another set of 5 dc in each ch-4 space from the previous round.
- Finish with a slip stitch in the first chain 3. (12 starflowers, 12 ch-4 spaces)
- Round 9:
- Ch 3 (counts as the first dc), then dc in the next dc, ch 4, 5 dc in the next ch-4 space.
- Repeat from to around, linking the starflowers by adding 5 dc into each ch-4 space.
- Make a slip stitch into the top of the initial chain to join. (12 starflowers, 12 ch-4 spaces)
Finishing:
- Weave in all ends using the yarn needle to secure the ends of the yarn from each round.
- Block the piece to 14 inches in diameter. You can block it by dampening the finished piece and pinning it into shape, allowing it to dry completely.
This blocking step ensures that the lace pattern opens up fully and gives the piece a smooth, rounded finish.
Additional Notes:
- The lace design relies on the “starflower” shape, which is formed by 5 dc worked into a single stitch with a ch-4 space between each flower.
- The use of ch-4 spaces helps create a delicate, airy effect between the starflower motifs, giving the pattern its lace-like texture.
- Be sure to maintain even tension throughout to ensure the pattern looks uniform.
